Bite Layout Help
« on: March 16, 2008, 12:59:06 PM »
Well guy's I know that your going to find this hard to believe but, in all the years of bowling that I have done, I've never thrown a Hammer. However, I was so impressed with the movement of the Black Widow Bite that I Bought 2. Now I'm planning the layout's and Would like a little advice.

What I'm looking for is two totally different reactions, that will compliment each other well. One, I'd like to see get down the lane and make a strong move when it face's up to the pocket. The other I'd like to see turn up in the mid lane a little more and continue with a smooth controlled arc, but still retain carry power. I fell that this would be an ideal combo considering the sport patterns that I bowl on. Of course, I have the generic "standard layout" sheets that come with the ball but I've never really trusted them for myself. Both balls are 15 LBS, one has got an almost exactly 2" pin, the other has an almost 3"inch pin and both have a little over 3 oz top weight.

    Here are my specs:

Power stroker/Tweener
17 to 18 MHP
High Track - PAP is 51/2 over 3/4 up

I have some Ideas but wanted to consult the experts before I punch these two beauties up tomorrow.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark D.

PS Just so you know I did post this in both the Hammer Forum and the Drilling and Layouts forum!

There's probably a few different ways that you could get the reactions you desire out of these things, and I'm in no way an "expert," but here's my opinion.

Since you've got one "long" pin, and a shorter one, I would put both pins the same distance from you axis point, the long one above your finger line and the short one below. This will give you the distance in length that you're looking for. As far as the breakpoint shape, I would put the mass bias in the strong position on the high pin, which will produce a nice angular move. On the lower pin ball I would put the mass bias out a little closer to your axis point, maybe 1" to 1 1/2" closer.

I wouldn't A LOT closer with the mass bias on the pin under ball, because you'll probably already need a weight hole (which will make it go earlier yet) based on the shift in the MB and in turn the CG.

Hope this helps. Oh and BTW, you mentioned carry power...you'll have that with the Bite no matter how it's drilled so don't worry about that! Let us know how it goes!

I like Matt's suggestions!

I would also change the cover on one of them to give you even more of a difference between the balls.

I would caution drilling the 2 with similar pin to pap distances. I have 2 drilled similar to the way matt describes And the covers must be very different from each other to see much separation.

Yes there is a difference in the 2, but its not drastic. And they dont really compliment each other terribly well. If I were to do it over again, I would make them completly different. That way the 2 have entirely different looks on the lane.
