You guys convinced me; I have a Pain on the way!
« on: February 14, 2007, 12:28:14 AM »
I've read many a suggestion that I add a Raw Hammer Pain to my arsenal. Well, I finally gave in and ordered one from bowlingball.com. You can't beat an awesome NIB ball for $89.99 shipped!

Now, how to get it drilled ... Hmmm ...?  My initial inkling is to go pin under ring, cg slightly right. Any thoughts?

I know you can get $10 for your first time using Google check-out, but that'd be $99.99. Is there another code?

Yes, for your first google check-out. But where does the other $10 come from? Is there another code, I asked.

To my knowledge, 10off75 is a code and the first google check-out is automatically factored in when you first use it.

I just tried it, and the 10off75 will work IN ADDITION to the first google
checkout.

This is a great ball to have in the bag.

Now for drilling layout.  The PAIN has a lot of built in mid lane read.  So if you drill it with the pin strong it may roll too early for you.

I have 2 Raw Hammer Pains.

Pain #1 pin above the bridge(5.5" from pap) CG kicked right to 1oz and no balance hole.

Pain #2 pin a little above the ring but more to the side (4.25" from pap) Cg kicked right to 1oz and no balance hole.

For me PAIN #1 will out hook PAIN #2.  See my profile for my style.

Well for me Pain #1 is my favorite.  This PAIN has a good mid lane read and a big back end.  Great bowling ball and layout!

PAIN #2 is all about the mid-lane for me.  The back end is also strong but not as much as PAIN #1.  This PAIN with the strong pin position layout is not good for playing deep.  This is much better playing straight or a small swing.  I drilled this PAIN to be used for control.  This ball/layout is all about control.

Layouts are really important on this ball.  The PAIN has built in mid-lane.  So if you use a pin placement that's pretty strong for you it will magnify the mid-lane read.  I prefer the longer pin to pap for this ball.  I feel the longer pin to pap really shows this balls strength.  The longer pin to pap will still have an awesome mid-lane read but will also have an awesome back end move.

Now don't get me wrong my PAIN #2 is awesome as well.  It's just more of a control condition specific layout.

To me this is a must have ball in a tourney bowlers bag.  It's that good on tough patterns.  This ball also responds great to cover changes.  I prefer my PAIN #1 at 500 or 1000 grit abralon.  It comes 2000 grit in box conditon.

I hope this helps.

I'd agree with Frank, Gene.  The Pain does have a lot of midlane built in already.  I have mine with the pin above ring and the CG out slightly, and I still get a ton of midlane from it.  I know, however, you have a much higher rev style than I do!

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

Thanks for all of the input. I was leaning toward putting the pin under the ring with the cg kicked just slightly right. I've been using that a lot as of late; with my speed, I rarely need to produce length, so this layout has worked. However, if the Pain is as much mid-lane-oriented as you both say, perhaps I'll place the pin above the ring instead. The ball should be here either Friday or Monday, so at least I have a few days to think it over. Thanks again for the thoughts. If you have any more, by all means post them!

There's a vid of the PAIN bring thrown on this forum.  The guy also has the pin below his ring finger and CG kicked right.  This should give you an idea of how it rolls.  Very good vid!  I will bring it to the top.

I've had the Pain for a few months now, after owning the Doom for a year and thinking it was the nuts.  The Pain has recently replaced my Doom as my fav ball, after continually notching up 250+ scores and 700+ series with it in the last 3 weeks or so, once i finally got control of its roll and reaction.

It is drilled with a 4 1/2 inch pin with CG in the centre of my grip, basically the same as my Doom, and where the Doom struggles with carry down, the Pain burns through it and hits the pins hard.  The opposition in my league have been amazed with the hit and carry i'm getting, along with the high scores, on lanes that have a league on directly before us, as they are leaving a lot of 10-pins; their balls aren't finishing hard enough.

I've found i can bowl a similar line to my Doom (across 3rd arrow and out to 5 board), but with increased speed to get a similar reaction, and the Pain gives a better read, recovering well from the outside or holding the pocket if the shot is a bit tight.

I can't recommend the ball enough for medium-heavy oil lanes, and hope you have the same success with it that i have had.
