Title: Phobia vs Scandal Pearl
Post by: Helluvahobbybowler on April 25, 2017, 12:37:14 PM
What's the difference (if any) in reaction between the Phobia and Scandal Pearl?  They both are symmetrical and seem to have similar specs.

Its a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG difference in those two balls. The Scandal is Hammer hook monster. Scandal is also for heavy oil only.

What? lol...Scandal Pearl not solid.

The Scandal Pearl should roll a touch sooner with the CFI version of the same shared cover having a little more mid-lane. They should be rather similar overall though as that Phobia is no slouch either.

Thank you.  Is there enough of a difference have both?

I have both and there are different for sure
the Scandal Pearl is earlier and predictable for me
the Phobia is a bit cleaner up front and longer, more of a hard arcing motion downlane
the Scandal Pearl is a stronger overall piece in my experience

Hello Group,
I just got the Scandal Pearl the other day and after a few adjustments I find that I love this ball so if you dont mind me asking, what ball would fit right under the Scandal Pearl?

I haven't thrown a Hammer ball in awhile and so I thought I better come in here and ask you folks and btw, I was looking at the Widow line but they all look great :)

If this helps I am throwing my Scandal Pearl between the 3rd and 4th arrow (righty here)

Not sure if I would go with one of the Legend balls or the Black Widow Gold to go underneath a Scandal Pearl. I know Hammer puts them in the line below and their covers are a bit weaker but the cores are stronger, and more often than not I've seen the strength differences between the two be a wash. Hammer is one of the more popular brands in my area too so I've witnessed quite a few instances for this particular scenario.

Now the Phobia could be a fairly natural step down. I'm not sure if it would be enough of one though. Personal preference plays a big role here and to me that's just too close to the Scandal Pearl. It handles less oil and gets down the lane farther with more backend, but personally for me by the time adjusting my line/release isn't enough to keep a ball in play then a minor step down isn't going to cut it either.

So I would go for something two lines below the Scandal Pearl. And you're probably going to want something polished. Balling down from polished pearl to surface usually isn't great, although it really depends on how the shot breaks down too. Still, in general terms I would just go from polish to polish or something with fairly high grit surface.

And that leaves... the Rebel? It's definitely a step down, and still a really smooth and predictable symmetrical motion. To me that makes a lot of sense. You could go with a Diesel or Rebel Solid too (both polished or surface brought up) but I like the original Rebel.

Obviously this is all just my (lengthy) opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. You know your own game and which types of balls you can work with better than anybody else. Well, hopefully. :D

For a step down... the Rebel would be the ball to get followed by the Cherry Vibe... for me, I have both the Cherry & Rebel drilled the same, and I have the Cheery about 2-3 boards weaker overall... but I love the Vibe cores and with the cover stock of the Cherry the same as the original Blue Vibe... makes for a versatile ball...

Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone, I had the Cherry Vibe back in the day and loved it but I think I might go with the Rebel. Is the red pearl Widow (the newer one) to strong to go under?

That would be closer to the Scandal Pearl but a different motion. I agree on the Rebel or wait for the Ebonite Affinity

Definitely the pearl (original) that only goes by the name Rebel. The solid is a fairly strong piece itself best used on something more than medium volume but less than true heavy if your speed isn't on the higher side.
