Plague is Sick!!!
« on: May 21, 2010, 12:32:28 PM »
Today at USBC Nationals in Reno, Bill Monce, Hammer's Midwest District Sales Manager, had 783 in team event with the Plague!  Ball was drilled with a 5 1/2" pin, and a mass bias kicked just right of the thumb hole.  Pin ended up just left of the centerline above the fingers.  No extra hole.  Out of the box at our 500/1000/2000 grit 3-stage finish.  Phenomenal score for USBC Team event!  This ball is sick!

So, are you saying if you were given a ball to test and you were bowling in a tourney, you would not test the ball?

Juggernaut,

I see both sides of the issue.  I would tend to agree with you on using a ball as the Midwest District Sales Manager for Hammer that is not going to be released until after the tournament would tend to raise some eyebrows.  While it was USBC approved it is not available for anyone other than the Hammer staff to throw.

Congrats to him on a nice series, I would tend to think it had more to do with him and his abilities than the ball.

Maybe the glass is half full.

Had he not had the ball he may have scored higher with his other Hammer equipment.

Good to see some honest comments on the forums. If you actually think about it...this is what really hypes a ball up.

With all things being extremely close between the top bowlers in the world. A round object with a layout to match COULD be the difference. However, the ability still lies with in the bowler and their skills.

Do you all remember the NV...How much hype did that produce and drive the price up for those shops that chose to sell their ball....

Marketing at its best.. Now this is bowling! Nothing different than promoting a ball that hasn''t been made in a number of years and having someone show up and destroy a pattern on one day only to see every one scrambling to find the same discontinued ball and not shoot the same scores.

I wonder why!

Two words... Genius Marketing.

I THROW MAN WEIGHT!!!

How is using a ball in the tournament LONG after the vast majority of Eagle contenders have sifted through Reno "genius marketing"?  "Genius Marketing" would have been the result of a late January-early February release and not from a release date closer to Independence Day where only the kids in the ivory towers and staffers get a chance to put their mitts in one and had the thousands of tournament bowlers chomping at the bit to get one punched out for the tourney like Storm has had with the VG in ''09, RoF and Invasion, or that Big B has had with the 3.5 for this season.

Bill Monce has immense talent.  He would have had a chance to use another ball and had a similar reaction to what he had.  Maybe he was able to harness the adrenaline release all of us ball whores seem to cultivate when his countless practice sessions came to life on the lanes in Reno.

I''m not sayin'', I''m just sayin''....

For those who still are under the impression that it's the arrow and not the Indian, please keep in mind that the top two in AE are throwing a ball that is essentially three years old.  Granted, it is Reno and they are lefties...

I know of other guys who threw products not currently released....They did not bowl well but I do not hear anyone complaining about their use of the equipment. Bottom line is new equipment that makes it in the hands of staffers, employees etc.. help us gather information to share with EVERYONE when the ball reaches its release date. It usually never is a big deal, and helps us share knowledge with you the consumer.

Wait, a guy threw a bowling ball and scored well at Nationals?  Crap, I must have one.  I bet this bowling ball rolls down the lane and hits pins?  I think I have a few of those.

I'm pretty sure with this new ball he just sprayed the ball from 1-20 and struck.

Sense the sarcasm?

It's okay to be excited about a new ball.  I see a lot of new releases and think wow that could be my next ball.  However, I don't look at other people's scores with said ball and get excited lol.

Silly.  You guys.  I tell ya.

And nobody is "complaining" about this one either. I asked a simple question about whether staffers and employees should be using proprietary technology in a PUBLIC USBC SANCTIONED OPEN tournament that is NOT available yet to the rest of the competitors, nor will it be available to them until this tournament is over.

Now you're just spouting. Not to be insulting, because in initial testing you might have a point, but this ball has already been approved, which means its been R&D'd to death, and they have gathered all the "information" about it that they'll ever need to share with us. This thread wasn't about sharing, it was about publicity.

quote:

And, judging from most of the replies, it doesn't seem to be a gigantic deal now either (except to those who took the question personally), but I ain't buying that "helps us share knowledge with you the consumer" stuff.

If so, then explain EXACTLY how a staffer using a ball, in a tournament that will be over before the balls release date, helps you "share your knowledge" with "us", the consumer, other than to shout "WOW, this ball is great because a staffer just went nuts with it at the U.S. Open", which in reality means exactly ZERO, because NOBODY IN THE GENERAL PUBLIC WILL GET THE CHANCE TO USE IT THERE!

I, personally, don't have a problem with it either. It was just a question that came to my mind when I saw this thread, knew the balls release date, and wondered how others might perceive it.

MOST seem to be fine with it.

since Bill Monce is an accomplished bowler do you think that has any part of his success rather than the ball?

Here is my $.02....... As a staff player that works hard to promote the Hammer Brand on and off the lanes....... I feel we have earned the right to have some perks of the business. Is the Plague are great ball.......ABSOLUTELY. Did Bill have an unfair advantage using this ball at Nationals......MOST LIKELY NOT. Bill is a good bowler who happened to get lined up and bowl well...and happened to be throwing the Plague. Bill could have shot those scores with any of our products. I know all the companies do this and this is the way we create hype about our new products.

Jeremy - I agree.  Bill could have been throwing a Nasty and scored that well.   In '09 I went to Vegas with a STING - The ball worked very well - I didn't throw it well - NO ONE COMPLAINED ABOUT ME!!  It takes the perfect combination of bowling skill and ball to score well at Nationals!

Great Bowling Bill!

I received my Plague on Saturday - Can't wait to punch it up!!
