Title: Ratchet or IQ Tour?
Post by: bowlman2345 on November 07, 2012, 02:33:12 PM
I'm looking to get a new ball really soon.  I'm a stroker/tweener, but can play different parts of the lane.  I'm looking for something that works on medium conditions, but is controllable on the backend.  I bowl in a scratch league that starts after a mixed league, so the conditions are always sketchy.  Mostly 38'-40' length and a dry backend.  I'm currently throwing the Gravity Shift and would like to upgrade to something fairly versatile.  I was going to go with the IQ Tour, but the only issue is I've never scored very well with solids.  The Ratchet seems like a strong ball too.

Suggestions?  I'll answer anything you guys need to know.

The Storm IQ Tour is actually a versatile solid that works well on the conditions you're describing.  Plus, it is a versatile ball that can allow you to play up the boards or move in effectively.  It's one of the more even reacting balls with a predictable arc motion.

However, if solids don't match up as well, you may want to consider a Storm Hy-Road or a Roto Grip Berserk.  Both are good hybrid choices that easily work on medium patterns.  I've been able to throw some great games this season with my Hy-Road once the lanes carry down and the backends dry up.  This is playing both inside and up the boards.

The Ratchet (aside from being asym) is a strong ball that offers a lot more hook than the IQ tour. The Ratchet is going to be for the heavier stuff while the tour is going to to be for medium patterns and control the backend. Both balls have solid covers, correct? So if you're a down and in stroker the IQ tour would be the most usable on what you're bowling on.

The ratchet is not a solid it's a hybrid.

The ratchet is not a solid it's a hybrid.

Wiki:
Quote
A ratchet is a mechanical device that allows continuous linear or rotary motion in only one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction. Though something of a misnomer, "ratchet" is also often used to refer to ratcheting socket wrenches, a common tool with a ratcheting handle, even though the ratchet mechanism comprises a small part of the tool.

I never once have asked my kid to bring me a ratchet.....it's a socket wrench!
