Save Bowling!!
« on: November 03, 2011, 11:24:41 AM »
We have had enough of the talking about how the industry is going down hill, so we decided to do something about it. Join the movement at www.savebowling.com and help us turn it around.

I dont believe the movement is about whether your honor scores are worth anything it is about bringing some integrity back to the bowling industry. When I was growing up if you averaged 190+ in any league you were the man, plain and simple. People would stop everything going on in the center and watch if someone was shooting a 300. If you were hot and on pace for a 800 series I think the whole world stopped. What they are trying to do is bring this back into perspective. Its great that people want to join leagues and have fun while doing so,but what is wrong with having scoring to go along with that senario. How can people justify the once a week league bowler vs the guy that practices three times a week and bowl three different leagues in three different houses having the same average. You cant it is impossible. Look at this way. As it stands now there is no separation in scoring between the once a week bowler vs somebody that does this 5 days a week. We want to bring back what was once an honorable sport.

I agree but I think the ship has sailed on trying to reign the high scores back in to what they once were.  There are to many bowlers out there that would just quit or bowl in unsanctioned leagues if the shots were made to tough and they couldn't average 220.  Just look at the participation numbers for sport leagues or for that matter the number of houses that even offer sport leagues.  I bowl in the only PBA league that is offered in one of the biggest bowling counties in NJ and we only have 14 teams of doubles.

That tells you that people don't want a challenge.  As sad as that is.

bowling is going downhill because of the prices. the ball, shoes, maintanance and everything else that goes with bowling is so high and absolutely ridiculous that nobody want to do it anymore. the price of bowling is ridiculous and the funny part is the idiots continue to raise the price. they are starting to act like the worthless government that we have right now.

You need to compete for something greater than just winning.

i applaud the idea of trying to get this sport back to where it was. i think there are a lot of factors. technology & easier patterns help make people think they know how to bowl. i have been around people who shoot 590-640 and complain to the manager / lane man, asking what they did differently. then they shoot 750 next week, and do you think they went up to those same people and said "thank you for the great shot tonight"? heck no!!  when they dont score, its the center, but when they do, they rolled the ball great and over came the pattern. that bothers the living crap out of me.

i think another factor is the change in the environment with people who have kids that play sports. today, it seems like sports are done year round. my daughter plays travel softball and we have practices in the offseason, along with camps, and pitching practice. kids are choosing other sports, and are busy year round, and do not have time to committ to 30-33 weeks of bowling.

i dont know what the answer is to save this sport, but i do hope it can be saved and start to grow again.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

I would say it is not the manufactures fault at all.  Moreso the center managers and CEOs.  It all starts from teh top, though.  Most center managers are acting in response to what their managers are harping on them about.  I have seen the emails from corporate big whigs from companies like Brunswick.  Thanks to those guys, the centers now have the mentality that they would rather risk losing the guaranteed $9.00-10.00 lineage for league bowlers and instead concentrate on the "Come in and bowl for .99 cents but spend your money on the $2.00 sodas and alcohol sales.

The center I am bowling at right now, has almost a full center of league bowlers 4 nights a week.  I would really like to compare the revenues from that center as compared to a center that would rather jack up their lineage and not care about lane conditions/maintenance to help push the league bowlers out the door, then promote open bowling like crazy and snack bar sales.
