Restoring a Dark Legend to OOB
« on: May 04, 2018, 03:33:59 PM »
Hello, I have a question about how to restore my Black Widow Dark Legend to OOB finish.

Bowling.com lists the OOB Surface as "500/1000 Abralon Polished with Powerhouse Clean N'Sheen"

My understanding is that Clean N'Sheen is no longer available, and that it (chemically?) produces a finish of 1500.

Anyways, what is the best way to recreate this surface? I absolutely love the reaction I get out of the ball, but the last couple practice sessions have seen the ball skid too long for my style and my carry has suffered as a result.

Thanks in advance!

This thread has some suggestions.  Charlest knows his stuff so I am sure there are some others as well.  If its skidding too far really want to avoid over polishing with polish or compound for sure (obvious I know sorry).

Thanks for the reply! I read that thread a week ago, but still thought I needed specific advice for this ball.

Without using another polish that may only replicate it with the right amount of pressure or starting grit, would I be able to achieve a similar result with no polish at a different grit?

I don't necessarily mind if, for example, just a 1000 grit makes the ball start a little earlier. My main concern is trying to replicate it, and in doing so, I get a ball the just goes longer.

Knowing this, what grit finish would you think would give me the closest reaction to OOB, with the caveat that I don't care if it reads just a little bit earlier in comparison?

Thanks again!

I would start with 500/1000 and if necessary go up to 500/1500 or even 2000.  Probably good to avoid compound and polish altogether if skid is an issue.  But yeah you should be able to get reasonably close to the reaction without compound/polish.

Well I really appreciate your advice, thank you. I will start with 500/1000.

NP.  Learned a whole lot from charlest and he usually is quick to point out compound is much tougher to get right and replicate than abralon.  Good luck and let us know if you are able to lock it in.

I bet 500 + polish would be close. 500/1000 as well
I still have some clean n sheen for my Arson Low Flare
Its a gritty matte finish polish. Don't really need it IMO
I usually take a factory OBB ball and put mu own finish on it so I can replicate later if I need to.
I did the factory tour and asked about the pads they use, I think it was 25 or so balls between pad changes, so you r ball could be the first one on the 1000 pad or the last one and they will roll different
I don't get to hung up on the factory surfaces, I just focus on what works best for me at certain places

Appreciate the input. The reason I asked about restoring OOB is because the ball was a carry monster. Everything but soft pocket hits struck, even balls through the nose the majority of times. I had an absolutely junk game go for 256 for my, at the time, high game this decade. Last couple times though, it was just sliding past the breakpoint. What would previously be a flush shot was a soft pocket, and flush shots couldn't carry the 10, with only high flush carrying.

With the OOB finish it got to the point where I was switching balls just so I could practice spares. Now that I'm starting league play, I don't want to have to worry about having to spare 4x 10 pins in a row under pressure.

What would be a nice step up from it? It's currently my strongest ball. Was considering the Dark Legend solid, as I don't buy the high price performance stuff.

Depends on how much of a step up and where you want the shape.
Best ball in my bag is the Gauntlet Fury.
Got it around Xmas and my average went up 8 pins by season end just by using that ball.
It made my target wider, gave me more miss room.
Up from that, the Ripd and Ripd solid are both monsters, just different monsters.
the Ripd solid hooks and hooks, just early to late
the hybrid is a shiny surface piece that starts to read the midlane in the oil
Definitely more than the GF
