Spike Black/Blue Ball Review
« on: June 06, 2014, 04:09:35 PM »
Heya Hammerheads... After throwing the new Spike Black/Blue for 2 weeks on a few patterns, I really like what I see in this ball & think this will be a ball you might want to add in your bag. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this ball or any other Hammer products....

BOWLER INFO:

PAP/Track:  5 1/8” x 1” up
Axis Rotation:  25 degrees
Axis Tilt:  12 degrees
Rev Rate: 440
Ball Speed: 17-19mph

LANE CONDITION

Lane Patterns Used: 41' House Shot, 2014 USBC Team & Singles/Double Pattern

COMMENTS

Ball Layout: 70 x 4 3/4 x 35

Likes: This new Spike has the same core, but has the Carbon Fiber outter core and the Jet Black Pearl coverstock. WOW what a difference that I see in between the original & this ball. The Spike Black/Blue is definitely stronger overall than the original and more defined backend motion. Very clean through the front part of the lane and a nice strong backend motion that evens out the over/under that I had with the original Spike. For me this ball worked best on when the patterns were in transition and I needed a ball to recover in the backends when the lanes opened up. This ball is perfect for the medium-light to drier lane patterns.

Dislikes: Tends to be a little too strong off the spot on the fresher patterns. I will drill another one with a pin down to smooth out the reaction for some tournament patterns.

This ball will work perfect for the lower rev rate bowlers that need a ball to get through the front part of the lane & turn the corner when the transition has forced them left of their comfort zone. With the high rg / high diff core (w/ Carbon Fiber) & the Jet Black pearl cover, this ball will help bowlers have a ball that will get down the lane with ease & turn the corner in the backends.
With the Carbon Fiber outter core, Hammer has provided a 3 year warrantee on this ball, so this is a great value for the money.

Make sure you place your order through your local pro shop for this great rolling piece from Hammer.

Thanks for the review plowboy

Do you think this would be a good compliment to the Absolut Curve? I have a Curve drilled 50 x 5 x 50 and I need ssomething that can allow me to open up the lane more. I've been hesitant in giving this a real look but after your review it has me interested

Yes... The new Spike is the perfect compliment to the Curve... Which I used both during league the other night & when the Curve was a little too much after the 2nd game, I pulled out the Spike and had a much better reaction...

Hope this helps...

The Spike will be longer & more angular down the lane than the Arson Low Flare which is a earlier & smooth in the backends....  Great compliment from the ALF to the Spike.

I just ordered the Black/Blue Spike and it should be here Friday. Gonna have it drilled up ASAP. I bought it to handle the lanes when the break down and my BWA is too strong. Hopefully it will bring me good results.

I have seen this very shiny orb!

It is skiddy and jumpy and strong looking.

At this moment I am more impressed with a high rev friends dulled up Original Spike which at times gives him incredible looks for at least a couple of games....then it goes away!

I estimate his surface at about 2000....

My Spike Black/Blue just arrived in the mail yesterday, but my ProShop guy is out until Tuesday. So I'm waiting until then to get it drilled. Debating whether to get it drilled in the Standard Layout or the Length Layout. Which would be better to assist when transition has occurred?

Just curious, how did you get it drilled, and what are your thoughts about the ball? I just ordered one and should have it next week. I have the original, and I am happy with it but not thrilled. Seeing some of the comments on the web, and watching the videos, I am excited to get it drilled and see what it can do.

I liked the original one, but it tends to be a little too over/under... the new coverstock on this ball definitely matches up better with the core... Very clean with a bigger backend motion than the original had... You will like this piece much better!

How would the new spike compare to the Cobalt Vibe?

Thank you for the reply Plowboy, I hope so! From what I seen in the video it has more of a backend motion than the original. Plus I tend to like pearls, they suite me better!

For me the new Spike is stronger overall than the Cobalt Vibe... About 4 boards, but more angular down the lane. Hope this helps!

Been using my Spike Black/Blue for the past month. This ball has put in so much work for me and has been one of the most reliable balls in my bag. If you need something when the lanes have broken down, or on the medium to dry side this ball is a must have in my opinion. For the price, quality and performance I would recommend this ball to anyone and am extremely happy that I purchased this ball.

EL3MCNEIL-In an earlier post you were hoping that it would be a step down from your B.W. Assassion. Could you compare the two. Am looking to get an Assassion and something that would be a step down for league this year. Thanks
