This is what I do and it works great.

Fill up a bucket, make the water as hot as possible. Cut up a old rag to use as plugs for the finger holes and thumb hole. Set the ball in the hot bucket of water, and use a rag to wipe it while it's in the water. Then once your done doing that, let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, then take it out, spill out the water, refill the tub with hot water again, and just repeat what you did the first time.

Here's what I do.

Put the ball in a bucket and put it under the bath tub faucet.  Let the hot water run into the bucket until the hot water turns cold.  The oil will float to the top of the bucket an run out.  Take the ball out of the bucket when the hot water from the "hot water heater" run out.  Wipe the ball and be good to go.

I also don't tape any of the holes on the ball.  Getting water in the holes DOESN'T HURT THE BALL!  The only thing that may happen is the inserts could get loose and need to be re-glued.  That's only happened to me once and i've done this HOT WATER TREATMENT many times.

The HOT WATER APPROACH works great!  It really does bring the reaction back into the ball.

Stick a tampon in the finger and thumb holes, then attach the end to some Silly Putty that completely covers them (one glob per hole).  Put the ball in the dishwasher.  MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF ANY HEATED DRY CYCLES!!!!! Turn off any "sanitizing-rinse" wash cycles or anything too hot, like heated dry cycles.

I run the machine without any other dishes in there because the oil and garbage coming off the ball flies into them.  But then you only need a light cycle.

Take it out, wipe it down, and you should be good to go.  It will feel as tacky as a basketball when you're done.
