Black Widow Legend's vs Taboo vs Original Black Widows?
« on: August 29, 2015, 02:04:32 AM »
Hey everyone. I am coming back to bowling after a long break and wanted to get some input on a few equipment before making a purchase. I originally used to carry the Black Widow Solid and Black Widow Pearl both drilled pin up with an Emerald Vibe back when they all came out. The widows both died/cracked and the emerald vibe I gave away. Before I took this break, I purchased a Taboo Blue/Silver (I believe it was a hybrid?), and a Cobalt Vibe. How does the new Black Widow Legend line compare with the Original Black Widow Solid/Pearl and the Taboo Blue/Silver? Where do they fall in terms of strength and potential?

Thanks!

I haven't personally owned the Taboo series, but I do own the BW Legend and the BW Red Legend. I have been told the the original BW Legend is the closest thing you will get to the original BW. My BW Legend is more usable on a variety of conditions and is my go to ball. On the othe hand BW Red Legend goes long and makes a sharp and defined turn on the backend. I can't normally use it as a first out the bag option at the houses I bowl at currently. I can use it the second game and maybe the beginning of the third before I either have to make a major adjustment with it or just ball down all together.

I would recommend the original BW Legend. I am actually thinking of buying another one for when my current one is no longer serviceable or just dies on me. Hearing good things about the Red Legend Solid and I've had my eyes on the Bad Intentions for a while as well. Might want to consider one of them as well.

Hope this helps.

i second that assessment on the legend. i would go legend then the viral has the vibe core with one of the widow covers on it (the sting i think) if you want an update for the cobalt vibe.

Thank you all for your replies. I just took a look at the Black Widow Legend and noticed that it is also a hybrid coverstock just as my Taboo Blue/Silver is. I also looked at both the Red Legend and Red Legend Solid and was wondering if this would be a closer duo to the black widow solid and pearl?

I currently carry the Taboo for more oil, the Cobalt Vibe for less oil, and a urethane black hammer for dry and spares. That works for normal house/league bowling but if I am going to start bowling tournaments again, I find myself having trouble when the Taboo just doesn't eat up the oil or I'm stuck between the Taboo and Vibe. I do like the look of the original legend, but if it is a Hybrid as well, I feel I may be in the same situation that I am currently in. Would the Red Legend Solid be stronger than the Taboo, and would the Red Legend Pearl fit inbetween the Taboo and Vibe?

Sorry for so many questions, just have been out of the bowling game for quite some time and when I noticed they started coming out with Black Widows again, I wanted to make sure that they were as good, if not better than the original two. I've had problems with the Bite and Venom in the past.

Thank you.

the covers on the all the legends are stronger than the taboos and original widows so the hybrid on the black legend acts more like the solid on the black widow solid. but you could also add surface to the black legend if you find yo need it stronger. it will be the closest carbon copy to the black widow solid. the red legend is just stronger altogether out of all them.

if you are looking for something between the vibe and widows i would look at the viral solid (solid cover vibe) or one of the arson low flares. the solid could be a benchmark ball you could go up or down from if needed and i would go pearl if youre set on starting with the widows on fresh and need something for transition

Cobalt Vibe has been a valuable tournament ball for me, along with the Legend.  Legend has been great on longer patterns like Paris and Badger, as well as on many house shots.  Vibe is very good on medium length patterns because it allows me to play a bit more direct.  I haven't thrown the viral, but guys who have thrown it tell me they need to do surface tweaking to get it close to the Cobalt Vibe.
