Title: What ball to use when lanes are too oily for BWB ?
Post by: Bowlin for Beer on May 08, 2008, 01:28:43 AM
My Black Widow Bite is the strongest ball I own, but sometimes the lanes are too oily (or maybe longer patterns) and the BWB just doesn't want to turn the corner.  I try slowing way down and putting much more hand in it, but I'm not comfortable making such drastic adjustments and my accuracy suffers.

I have the ball in out of box 4000 abralon and its drilled similar to Drilling #3 - Strong Layout for High Track, except the pin ended up slightly above the ring finger.

Is there a Hammer that would be able to turn the corner on heavier oil ?

I suppose I am generally medium speed, medium revs.

Thanks in advance.

easy awnser. take the cover down to 600 (or ever 400 grit it the lanes are really just that flooded), i bet youll get that early read your looking for.

First make sure your playing the best part of the lane.  If your playing on a THS then play closer to the oil/dry line.

Another option would be to adjust the cover to a lower grit.  Bring the ball down to 1000 grit and see if that solves your problem.  If that's not enough then bring the cover down lower to like 500 grit.

If your really looking into getting a ball to handle the oil better then the original NM would be my choice.  The original NM has better mid-lane read than the Bite and would work a bit better on heavier oil.

Thanks.

I really don't want to mess with the Bite.  It's great on medium oil (for me), and I don't know what conditions I'm going to encounter where I bowl until practice.  Then, theres not enough time to change surfaces and still get in a good amount of practice time.  Besides, it's my duty as an American to stimulate the economy - hence, its time to add another ball.

So drill another Bite and dull down the cover if you like it so much...I've got 2 Bites with different cover preps and they compliment each other very well.

If you want to stick with Hammer, perhaps you might consider getting the Anger and taking its coverstock to a lower grit.  It's a solid ball and is less expensive than the Widow or No Mercy series of balls.

Personally I prefer heavy-load particle balls for heavy oil.  My favorites from the past are the New Standard 2 from Lanemasters and the Reaction Arc from Columbia 300.  I also had pretty fair luck with the Fear Factor by Storm in heavy oil.  Good luck.

I would  drill an Anger with a Rico Drill. This should help you get through the heavy oil with a nice continuous strong arc

Anger at 1k pin under finger line if needed add a low weight hole in thumb quad, if that dont hook it aint the ball.

I'd use less ball speed.

Oob on the bite is NOT 4k abralon, that is why it won't handle oil like you would like it to. 4k abralon and a mild drill, anything past my ring finger, tend to be great on medium for me and push past the break on heavier side of medium, leave lots of buckets.

So its not the ball, or the bowler its the surface.

If you wanna look at other brands, get a Cell. I just picked up a Cell, drilled it 4x4 and it's a great ball when the Bite is hooking too late. Crazy midlane read and a VERY strong backend if you drill it for that too.
