Couple questions and Toxic info (Kinda Long)
« on: January 26, 2007, 02:11:01 AM »
My main balls that I use right now are my Killer Instinct Pearl and my OOB surface Hammer Big Deal.  Our house just changed the shot to a 43 foot shot with a decent volume of oil but nice backends, and pretty dry on the outside. I would say medium to medium heavy oil. In the last two weeks I have not been able to carry at all with my Big Deal.  I am a high rev bowler with medium to high speed and I prefer to throw a deep inside line. Out of 9 pocket hits in a game I am leaving on average about 5 to 6 taps with the Big Deal.  I am not just leaving ten pins I am leaving everything in the back row.  If I keep it in the oil it finishes too hard and leaves 8 and 9 pins.  If I get it out to the dry I am leaving week 10's and 7's.  I have tried adjusting but nothing seems to work.  Last night I pulled out my KIP in the middle of the 3rd game and I was killing the pocket with it, and every pocket shot carried.  The oil volume last night was slightly lighter than the previous weeks, so I have two questions.  Do you think that the Big Deal may be too much ball for the lane conditions and that is why I am not carrying at all?  Also do you think a Toxic would fit the bill as a good ball between the KIP and the Big Deal?  Our shot the two previous weeks seemed to have a slightly higher oil volume and I seem to do better with pearl balls.

Either a TOXIC or a DOOM would be fine.

i would highly suggest a doom, toxic, or even a black widow.

it sounds like the big deal is starting its roll a little too early for the condition your bowling on co when you get it out, it doesnt have the strong recovery causing the weak tens.

a doom will be a little easier to read off the break point depending how you drill it. i am also a high rev player and this ball has definitely been working better for me with a pin down layout, something below the bridge specifically.

the toxic i have had a similar case with. Going pin up with it will cause a very clean through he heads reaction, but leaves the back end not as predictable.
with my toxic i have gone pin down with the cg kicked at a 45 degree angle with a balance hole to adjust the static weights. this ball still has a great backend motion and is still extremely clean through the heads.

so if you want an extremely strong backend motion i would say go for the toxic for sure. i have found i leave a lot of 9 pins and blower 7's due to the extreme entry angle however.

for the widow, if you wanted something solid that is still a snappy backend i would definitely invest in this ball. number one on the market and one of the most versatile balls i have ever thrown. if you put the pin above the fingers this ball is automatic money. keep the Mass Bias close to the thumb to get that snappier backend reaction. you could leave the ball out of box for the condition your bowling on and then adjust it with some factory finish powerhouse polish if necessary. this will be the most consistent reaction due to the solid coverstock hands down.

anyone of these three balls will definitely fit in between your two current bowling balls.

if you have any questions just pm me. more than happy to help

Toxic will be perfect as the Doom may leave too much of a gaop between the other balls.  Toxic is little stronger than the Doom and less skip flippy

I have to second what Shermdawg says about the Widow.  It seems to me as though you could go straighter with the Big Deal and do just fine though.  The Big Deal, being a very even rolling ball, will not work too great on patterns where the oil has carried down.  It will make its motion, but due to a lack of friction on the back you'll have a lack of coninuation.  I would have to assume that you leave more 8's (righty?) then 9s on that tight line, and you leave the 9s when you get it up on the head pin a bit.  Going straighter though with a slightly higher surface should conserve more of the ball's energy and provide better carry.

As for the Widow, it will naturally get more length, and backend.  It is a fairly strong ball with tremendous continuation, and will allow you to play anywhere.  I too may opt for a higher pin, especially if you want it to fit between the KIP and BD.

Thanks for the info I will let you guys know what I get and how it works out.  I will probably do either the Black widow or the toxic.  I will decide soon.

I have found the opposite with the skid flip.  For me the DOOM is a lot smoother than the TOXIC.  The Toxic is all about skid flip.

Drilled a Toxic pin down and cg out and stil is skid flip. Great move but definite skid / flip. I would hate to see one drilled above bridge and cg in palm. That would be voodoo on the back.

ferrierl,  I still do not quite understand why this works , but a friend of mine took his Sling Blade, pin above ring and cg straight below, sanded it to 1000 Abralon, and has been killing them off the dry. OOB was too jumpy off the dry and the cover is not strong enough to play in the oil. The weaker cover taken to 1000 is so smooth at the break but the pin up still gives it enough pop to kick the corners and not too sharp to leave the ring ten. Just an observation, I still do not quite get it, but he has been carrying when the rest of us struggle.   Al

Just picked up a Toxic this weekend and drilled it pin above bridge.  WOW!  This ball goes so long and then look out!  HUGE turn to the pocket!

I've noticed the ball seems really versitle to release adjustments.  I can't roll this ball with as much hand as I normally use or it's just too hard to control on the back end.

I think with some more practice time, this will be a good ball for me.

Why has nobody suggested the pain.... I love mine, very predictable.. I feel the pain would be more predictable than the toxic. Is this not correct?

You are correct.  The Pain is very predictable and would be an excellent choice.  Out of the 3 Raw Hammers the Pain is the most predictable with the DOOM being 2nd.
