Do you go for it?
« on: July 09, 2006, 04:51:20 PM »
Ok I got my first 300 back in Nov. with my HDB and 2 800's within 10 days during Nov.. June 25th in our sunday night league first game I get a 2nd 300 for the year, this time using my Cobalt bomb. We take a week off of league for the 4th of july, then come back tonight. We're getting beat pretty bad *104 avg bowlers shooting 180 / 180 just friggin rock ya know?* and i'm bored so the fill ball of 2nd game I pull my new red XXXL I got drilled up at nationals, play it up 10 and just smash the pocket. *I owe any awards I've gotten to Andy Shutt with nationalbowlingstore.com, since he's been drilling my equipment my game has changed dramatically.* So i'm like hell with it, i'll use the xxxl for the whole game. I proceed to go front 11 then before I get up for the final ball I turn and tell my team I don't want another 300, that I want to get a 298 or 299 then I go and throw it wider and manage the 298.

What would you do? I had some people telling me I should of went for it to see how many I could get in a season and all. I personally just like to get rings since they're still new to me, having extra award "papers" just aren't as rewarding to me.   I really wanna go in next sunday and shoot a 299 to really have some fun. If I do I think I might have to pre-bowl for the next week, so I can get a 900 to complete my set and all ya know.

I always go for it.  The "choke" rings will come eventually.  Even though 300s are getting easier, they are not easy by any means.  You still have to execute the shot and be somewhat consistent with the shot making in order to carry a long string of strikes.  You never know when that chance to shoot 300 is going to be the last chance.

According to some, not going for the 300 is somewhere between killing a puppy and putting catsup on a steak.  Closer to the puppy, I think.  It was a big stink when Whatisname tried to run the series from 290 up to 300 and finally got that 291 or 292.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with it.  You set a goal and achieved it.  Purposefully getting 9 isn't that easy, especially when you've purposefully gotten the last 11 strikes.  Of course, getting 2 is somewhat harder, but it leaves something to shoot for.

Definitely could be viewed by some as killing a puppy.  Could be viewed by others as a form of sandbagging also.

** Do note the above is not my personal opinion.  It is however the opinion of the one bowler in every center that has an opinion about EVERYTHING.**

My personal opinion is as follows...always try for the perfecto!

I do not see how it could be sandbagging if you are shooting in the 290s.  But, like you said, not your opinion but the opinion of the one idiot that every league has.

I don't see someone who has recently shot two 300s and two 800s and going for a 298 instead of 300 for the third time as sandbagging.  Going for the 279 in the 10th frame, on the other hand, is the mark of a dirty, low-life, cowardly cheater.

Along those lines, would you consider going for the triplicate, needing only three pins in the tenth frame of the third game (and the triplicate being within a handful of pins of average) to be sandbagging?  That was my situation last year; I needed three pins on my first ball in the 11th or 0 and six on the second (got seven).

I did that.  I had a 269 triplicate.  but to get it, I had to ditch the fill ball in the tenth the last game.  If I struck out in the tenth, I shoot 279.  I tossed the fill in the gutter.  I already had 800 intact and was not going to gain anything filling in count on the last ball.  So, what the heck?

Well I guess it's a good thing I didn't mention if I get my 299 soon that I plan to try that lol. I have a 290 from 2001, I got a 297 in my first 800 this season and a 296 after my first 300 when I was trying for a 8 or 9 and pulled it.

Good deal.  Not many can claim a triplicate, and I'd put down money that "honest" trips are extremely rare.

When I missed mine, I moved left and tried to send it wide to get the three-count (had two strikes preceding it, three would have given me six pins).  Threw it a little too wide and got nothing.  Lots of cheering and "ooh!"s.  Tried again, hoping to come in light and leave the fence but got seven instead.  Lots of disappointed moaning.  171-171-172.  Lots of funny looks, most were along the lines of "They cheer for gutters and seven counts, no wonder they're in last place".

In a day when 300 games were more revered you should've gone for it.
But now a days where any Tom, Dick or Mary can throw a 300 game,do what you want ( unless,it of course happens to hurt your team from winning your team point, remember it is still a team game).
As far as anybody worrying about sandbagging, this is the summer time.
