Sting
« on: November 12, 2007, 08:10:03 AM »
I picked one up a few months ago and was wondering, how everyone else is scoring with it and on what type of conditions?

I have a Terminator, Yeah Baby, Big R Bang, Straight Flush and the Absolute Power and #2.

I didn't have much success with the Sting, had to go back to my bench mark ball, the Terminator.

Your replies will be appreciated!

Thanks...

i am still having troubles with mine as well. I've tried various surfaces. and now i'm thinking of plugging it and redrilling it.. the thing is i got one of the first buzz's from johnnie jones and i have had terrible luck with it. for some reason these 'insect' balls are just not working it for me. but i go to my terminator, masterpiece and big r bang and can shoot lights out (if i throw it right.)

the buzz and sting are giving me the same reaction. very moderate over/under. but its just enough to get me impatient. both balls have tremendous ease going down the lane. but the breakpoint each time seems to be squirrly. i have league tomorrow night and instead of sanding both balls like i have been doing for the past couple months. i polished the heck out of them and maybe it'll be a little better.. if it works i'll post a reply.

With the wrong drilling, both the Sting and the Buzz can induce some over/under reaction due to their highly polished base coverstock and their low flare potential.

Both covers are easily adjustable.

I tried my Buzz at 2 optional surfaces:
1. 2000 dull completely sanded: with this cover it was able to easily handle medium-heavy oil. It was interesting but not what I needed.
2. I sanded it back to 800 grit and then reapplied Legends factory polish LIGHTLY. AT this stage, it was earlier than the stock cover (this is what you, Phlap218, may need) and also handled slightly heavier oil, probably true medium, maybe very slightly more. Or I could just stand 5 -8 baords deeper than I did with the stock highly polished cover. It also handled more carrydown this way.

Ultimately I took it back to its stock highly polished cover; it still handled some carrydown and is just the way I like it.

The STing can also be resanded to 800 girt. Then add a light dose of Legends polish. This should have an equivalent effect that I described above with the Buzz.

FYI Of course, you can redrill both with either a lower and/or a closer-to-the-Pap oin position to get them to have less over/under also. They still might need a surface adjustment, which you shoudl have no hesitancy about trying.

Good luck.

My pin is above my ring finger, with a pap of 5 5/8, with 5/8's up.  I really don't like re-drilling balls, I don't think it ever works out.  I may just hold on to this and pick up a Black Pearl.  I was considering the WCPP, but it seems to be close to the Sting.

sell me that Sting and be done with it, btw i have the wcpp on the way and you are missing the boat by not having it. I have watched that ball for months for a local guy that is hooked up with Legends, alot more midlane and backend than either other world class ball.

The roll is more like a Black pearl that handles more head oil, think Terminator with more backend.

It can and it does, if you do it right. You and your driller can continue to "guess" wrong about drillings. There's no guarantees.

Changing surfaces is usually the right change, most times.Redrilling is necessary is less than half the cases, in general, if you were right in picking the original ball for your release and your oil patterns in the first place.

i agree with charlest. Redrilling balls has never been a problem with me. if i dont like a ball i'll always redrill it. and about 90% of the time it works perfectly after talking to my ball driller and deciding on something else. i have even spoken to galen about redrilling an AP2 and Sam Baca was kind enough to send me a new one after i redrilled my AP2 and loved it.

i just got back from my league and what a difference polishing the heck out of my sting made. it went longer but the move was soo hard but sooo controllable. it hit the pins really nice and there was more deflection which helped me kick out the corners more than when it was sanded. i still might redrill it though.

I've had my sting for a month and a half or so now and love it.  I have scored on about anything short of light oil.  The Cheetah pattern did not like it too well unless I took a lot of hand out of it but I'm able to use mine on the long Shark and the collegiate sport patterns with no problems.  Everything in my area I have seen with the ball have had only success with then so far.  Could be that the drillings are just matching up with the bowlers.  only 1 shop really sells and drills a decent amount.
