Terminator or Black Pearl
« on: January 15, 2007, 09:17:31 PM »
I wanted to try another Lanemaster ball and have narrowed down my choices between the Terminator and the Black Pearl. I tried a Big Kahuna and didn't match up with it too well. I have a Big Bang and like it but wanted something to compliment it. Just looking for something for the medium to medium heavy conditions. Just wanted to hear your personal opinions or preferences.

Thanks for you help

For medium to med/heavy, i would have to say the BP would work better.  From what ive heard, the Terminator is STRONG.  Unless u wanted to give the terminator a somewhat weak drilling, the BP is probably going to work better for u on that condition.

Also, if u like the BB, its fairly angular, the BP is even more angular, & depending on who u ask, is a GREAT ball.

Hope this helps, i have no exp with either, just giving my opinions.

How did you drill the BK and on what type of pattern did you use it?

I have also used a Black Pearl and found the drill I used on it made the ball too flippy for me with far too much backend. So to recommend a ball and/or drill I'd like to know how the BK did NOT match for you. I found it a great ball because of the lack of flare, it was more controllable and hit very hard.
Unlike the BK and several other LM/L balls, both the Terminator and the black Pearl, although strong, come highly polished.

Thank you Charlest

The BK was only good on Medium conditions for me. My Morich stuff gave me better reactions on oilier conditions and my BBang was good for medium heavy stuff. I had the BK drilled 5 X 3 with the pin over my ring finger, small weight hole. It was a good ball, but I just prefer some of my other equipment over the BK. EX: Power Machine, Awesome Revs, or Lane#1 Uranium.
I'm choosing between the Terminator and the Black Pearl because I've read that for "polished" balls they are very forgiving but still very strong and controllable.
I have been lucky enough to have more than enough balls to fill my arsenal but really wanted to try another Lanemaster or Legends ball.

I was just fishing around for anyones experiences, to see if any of these two balls were one of those must haves or must try balls.

Adam,
Based upon my personal experiences with these two balls, I believe that either could work for you; both will handle a decent volume of oil, but I've found the Terminator to be a bit stronger because of it's cover/combo than the BP, but just slightly. (See my profile for balls and layouts).
Galen Gentry is a good source for recommendations on ball TWs and pin lengths to match up to your style/stats, as well as layouts to match up to you and the conditions that you play on. Keep "us" posted !!!

For very slick synthetics the Terminator is a great choice but as stated already you need more oil volume for it to even work well and not burn up even oob . I find the BP to be a better true medium oil ball and it would be ball you find yourself using alot because the carry is way above average at least for me it is.

Out west i only bowl on slicker synthetics they are no wood houses left within 100 miles so if you bowl on wood it should be alot easier to go with the BP imo.

I have heard the dulled terminator's are about 6-7 boards stronger at 1000 matte than polished so if you wanted a flood ball that would be another option.

Thanks, I bowl on synthetics also. From Bowling this Month's reviews they have the Terminator with 8's on Heavy oil and 8.5 to 9's on Mediums. For the Black Pearl they have it as 9's on Heavy and 7 to 8's for Mediums. So from that I was guessing the Terminator might be a little more versatile than the BP. Just by going with the magazine reviews. So I thought I would turn to the REAL World bowlers here on ballreviews.
I like the core on the BP but have heard good things about the Terminator and have seen more of them around, compared to the BP. Tough pick for me right now.

I have the Big Bang and Black Pearl.
Both are drilled pin under ring finger with the CG stacked directly below.
My Big Bang is ruff buffed and my Black Pearl is polished to a glass finish.
On a medium, medium-heavy to medium light I use my Black Pearl.
Eash length, perfect mid-lane read, tons of flare with a big, but controlled backend.  The light load particle kills carry down.
The hit and pin action is vintage L/L. I don't leave a lot of 7's (Lefty) and the carry is awsome.
At the house I bowl in I actually use it exclusively now.
Best all around ball of the L/L family for me.

SAME here, i am totally lost on which one of these balls i want to get, i have a post on this forum trying to build a arsenal of just L/LM and at first i wan't going to choose the Terminator because my friend has one, but i changed my mind, and my next choice is the Black Pearl, I will say i have seen my friend tyhrow his terminator on my different types of shots , and it works on anything from medium to the heavy stuff. I don't know how it does it, My Hawgzilla which i am selling, would be leaving weak tens on nbroekn down mediums, and his ball at 1000 with no polish would still be getting nasty strikes. ANything less than that it is over for using that ball. So i see iut very versatile, which i don't need it to be if i get it since i got other balls for those conditions, i just want it for heavy oil. And his definitly works on the slicks.

Small wonder. With that drill, you added length and reduced the small falre the ball started out with, for control, into almost a light oil ball with lots of length and minimal backend. I've drilled 2 for me, one 15 and one 16. One with pin in ring and one with pin under ring. Unless you have about a 400 rpm rev rate, that drill will mimimize the potential AND the hook of that ball. Those other balls all hook a lot more than the BK.

They can be depending on the usual factors. Both flare a LOT more than the BK.

Still be careful how high you put the pin, depending on your PAP and the usual suspects.
