Title: Ball Cleaner, how many complaints do you get about the smell?
Post by: jd1319 on December 06, 2006, 01:18:01 PM
I've been using a World Class, and the ball has been wonderful, but after each set it's almost turning brown due to belt marks/dirts, so after every set, I clean it.  However, it never fails to draw moans and complaints over the smell.  Some people have complained it's making them sick, or gets them high, etc...

Does everybody get these complaints, or are people just whiners where I'm bowling at?

No, they are correct, the stuff stinks. Great cleaner, but the odor would gag a maggot.

Be careful about using it on anything other than Legends/Lanemaster balls. I used it on my Brunswick Absolute Inferno and it draws out the color and I mean lots of color out out of the ball on my towel every time I clean it. Now after several cleanings this ball has lost it's punch.

The label DOES state to only use it in a well-ventilated area ...

I tell you what, this is the best cleaner I can find. Nothing else I've used has cleaned as well. I clean in my basement with my home made ball spinner and I don't mind it at all. When I first used it, it was a bit strong. But I like my balls to last and this works well. I do try to have my boys stay away from that area when I clean, but otherwise good stuff.

It is an excellent cleaner, no argument on that. Just beware when using it on balls not made by L/LM.

I've used it on my Dynothane Vendetta Black and Thing Lives. Nothin happened with them. I've read the thread about someone with a Brunswick ball that it took the color out of. But personally (no disrepect meant) I think that would have to be a problem with the ball, something screwy with the coverstock. I use a spinner and even with heat, have found no ill effects on any ball I've cleaned.

Love the ability of LM/L cleaner.  I use it right after bowling in the center and get all of my equipment clean with it.  Best to clean right after use for better ball life.

After Robb's post about LM/L submitting it for the USBC approved list....I can't think of why not to use it....unless you really hate the smell.  Original smell was worse than the current grape.

I've used it on a number of different balls/different manufacturers over the last couple of years with no ill effects.

justink, that was me. If you will note, I also said it lost it's punch, not just it's color, but it's punch too. On L/LM balls it has not effected their performance like it did my Absolute Inferno. I think this cleaner took something more than just the color out of that ball.

Brickguy, you may be right. It would make since that if a cleaner was made too strong that it could damage a balls cover stock. I don't know about it effecting it's performance. But again I still feel that it might be partly the balls fault. The ball was harboring some ill-gotten anger towards the cleaner. Just kidding, I don't know, just sounded like an interesting theory.

Brick,

The Lanemasters people have already said that they tested an Absolute Inferno and the cleaner did not affect it. I and others here use it as our every day cleaner on all brands of balls and it has had no effect on their performance. I am using it on a CLassic Zone (Activator), a Fire Quantum (PK 18 pearl), a Slay/R (PK 18 LS), and a Nemesis (PK 18 solid), as well as Track, Visionary and Dyno-Thane balls and none of them has lost any performance.

The cleaner is plain iso-propyl alcohol of industrial strength.

I suspect the cover on your Absolute had some other manufacturing defect or some other liquid in concert with the isopropyl alcohol may have affected your ball.

Charlest, I know that is what they claim, but with my experience being different, I just want others to know this can happen. I would advise that they should spot check before doing a whole ball. It might save someone from possibly altering the performance of their ball like what happened to mine.

That is what they claim also, but hard to believe something of that strength would be powerful enough to do that to a ball, so I am a bit leary of what they say about the strength of this cleaner.

To be safe, I no longer use their cleaner and use Black Magic Rejuvinator of which I was previously using before I tried their cleaner that came with the ball.
