give me an arsenal
« on: June 05, 2006, 03:06:19 AM »
I may have a chance to get some Lanemaster stuff cheap so I'm considering getting a 3 ball set up.  Since I know nothing of the equipment I'm seeking ideas.  Me - 17 mph, 350 rpm power stroker.  What 3 LM balls would be a good set up for me?

Lane conditions vary.  House shot is usually 40-42', flattish.  I bowl in some houses (tournaments) with a more typical house crown.  Rarely see really heavy oil (though I did a bit last weekend).  Looking to cover from med-heavy to dry, with the ability to have 3 not overlapping balls on flatter shots.  Anything works on the ths, doesn't it?

LM/L has no ball for "dry". The new Buzz is potentially the closest, from all descriptions I have read; I don't have one and have not yet seen one (JS, get busy!). (The Buzz goes long on any fresh oil and "seems" to need more serious dry to make the turn, then other LM/L pearl resins.) The main problem is that the LM/L designers believe in having strong reacting (read "big hooking") balls. I just drilled a SatisfaXion very weak (6" x 4.5"), but have not yet tried it to see what the results are.

The Absolute Power and a couple of the other pearl resins can be drilled very weak or surfaced (like 4000 grit PLUS polish) to make them weaker.

Basic "decent" 3 ball arsenal:
Absolute Power
Big Kahuna
Yeah Baby! or Big Bang
to cover medium-light to medium to medium-heavy+ oil patterns.

For your 350 rev rate, you probably want a 4"- 4.5" pin-PAP placement. 60 - 90 degree CG placement should work fine.

(FYI I get strong backend using anywhere from 3"- 5.5" pin to PAP placement, pin height anywhere from under the level of the bridge to just above the level of the bridge. I have one or two where I drilled the ring finger hole right through the center of the pin. I kind of like that result and will probably do it again.)

For a dry lane ball you may want to wait until the Straight Flush is released later this month/early next month.  I was speaking with Galen at LM and he said it was a 3 piece weaker core ball that was really good for when they were toast.

charlest....Robert Mockenhaupt (hiflush) gave a review of the Absolute Power and his view of the AP vs. The Buzz is:  "Depending on the surface, I will choose The Buzz or the Absolute Power when the breakdown occurs. For me, this ball (AP) hooks less than my Buzz by about 2 to 3 boards."

The only problem is that he didn't say how his AP or Buzz were layed out.

Funny, I was begining to think the Buzz was the new name for the Straight Flush. Last I heard the SF was due out last October; I thought they had given up on that ball. Just checked out Robert's review of the AP; so for him the Buzz is still a strong ball. (But for both the AP and the Big Kahuna, Robert placed the pin high and got balls less useful on "normal" oil. that's the "problem" with Legends balls, the act the way you drill them, every time that I have seen, so far!)

"Rags",
Although I hold charlest in the highest regard and truly value his opinions, his threads, and his input in BR I would strongly suggest treating this question like a visit to the doctor's office and get a second opinion or maybe a few opinions. If you have your current stats (PAP, ball speed, etc), you could always email Galen Gentry at galen@legendsbowling.com or call him for direct contact and input.
Hope this helps and good luck !!! Be prepared to be highly impressed if you get the proper matchups and layouts that compliment yur style.

Robb,

Don't worry; I won't get insulted if someone suggests another possible arsenal. I could build 8 or 10 more, as can anyone who uses several of Legends/lanemasters balls. I was only throwing out one reasonable one, based on Rags's release and the oil pattern on which he was bowling. He knows that and I do too. So feel free to give him yours, as should anyone else. I have no axe to grind and yours may turn out to be a better set than mine, for Rags.

Charlest,
Actually, I LOVE yours !!! I was simply stating that he should get as much input as possible and then make his own, well-informed decision.

Totally agree with the AP best ball Ive ever had chance to use and sold me completely on LaneMaster/Legends.
I would try the World Class in there somewhere though. Ive found that its so consistant on dodgy patterns and oil. Maybe the dill I have on it but it seems to be stronger on oil in box than my Yeah Baby. I have had to really dull my Yeah Baby due to a dye problem with the ball and only then has it out paced the WC on true heavy oil.
I have to try to get hold of a Big Kahuna as everyone says how good a ball it is so I cant comment from first hand findings.
But I can state without any doubt that for top and bottom of your arsenal you wont go far wrong with the AP and WC.
As charlest said just another oppinion but I dont think you can go wrong whichever LM/L ball you choose in their respective areas.

New Standard
Absolute Power OR SatisfaXion
