Question
« on: September 20, 2008, 03:58:06 AM »
What's the deal with these sheen and matte finishes on on Lanemaster balls. Thanks to the guru Charlest, resurrection on the Big Bang was money but would'nt(is that a word) standard abralon be okay. Want to take my XS Power back to OOB for donation to local college team and ball is currently at 2000grit abralon. Suggestion from the knowlegeable would be great!

"Wouldn't" is the abbreviation for "would not". And that's about as much as I can help on this one.

The XS Power was SUPPOSED to be released at 800 grit dull or matte. That would be a simple light grey nylon Scotch-Brite pad. And both BJI and BTM reviewed it at that grit level. However, and note that I have not seen one in person, I have heard that most of them came with either what would be described as a "sheen" or some even called it a polished appearance. The Lanemasters website says its finish is 800 grit matte. That is the light grey pad.

looks like same situation for the dynamic power.
the 08 catalog off of l/m site shows it at 800 matte.
but now their ball specs section on the site shows it with a high sheen finish.
my XS power was same way. i had to take the sheen finish off that i thought would be matte.
i do better with the duller surface for more oil.
which is why i would have to take the dynamic power down to a duller finish if it is released in the sheen or polished look.
my question would be does this weaken the strength of the ball removing the oob finish?

In general, as far as I have learned, the stock finish is the one the manufacturer believes will be of the most use to the widest number of people to get the ball to perform the way it was designed to perform.

A couple of people behind the design of several balls have said that a ball's stock surface should be considered a "suggestion". So, as far as I am concerned, that means change it to whatever you think will work best for, if the stock surface does not perform the way you want it to perform or think it should perform.
