A vague question (aren't they all?)
« on: September 09, 2006, 09:05:26 AM »
So I've decided to give L/L a whirl. I'm looking for something that will fit above my bruiser (it's about 1000 grit) in terms of oil handling capabilties, as I'm becoming more speed-dominant than I had been. I was checking out the World Class, seems like a good piece and I've heard good things. Unfortunately I can't tell you my stats since my change (I'll be able to see a Quibica speed monitor on Monday), but if any of you had seen my August video, I've dropped my rpm rate a bit and increased speed quite a fair margin. In that video I was throwing my quantum elite (odd ball, stronger than it should be, but still not very strong) standing around 30-35 I guess to about 10.  Speed, maybe 15.5 at the deck (no real idea).  Latest bowling, I was using said Bruiser standing about 15-18 playing around 7-8 at the break, so I've obviously become more speed dominant.  But I'll likely tone down the speed somewhat to be inbetween the two "styles", as I'm not overly comfortable playing that area (never could before).  But I'm going off on tangents now, so I'll stop myself and get some opinions.  If you actually read up until now, you've probably forgotten the question from my rambling.  It was "What L/L ball would fit above a bruiser sanded to 1000 in terms of oil handling, perhaps a World Class?"  I don't want a massive jump, I'm not looking for the biggest hooking ball or something.  Just a step above, to fill a spot in my arsenal.  Thanks for any help.  If I can, I'll try to get some video on Monday, but we'll see what happens.

While I have a Bruiser I used in its stock polished state and I have 2 world Class particles balls, I haven't sanded a Brusier BUT I have a Nemesis on which I made the surface finer, from 800 grit to 1200 grit. SO I think my comments should be valid.

I think the stock World Class will fit above your 1000 grit Bruiser, BUT I think it may be 1 1/2 to 2 steps above it. The World Class is in Lanemasters class of their strongest, oil loving, oil needing balls: WC, Big Bang, Terminator (not polished), AP2 and the Yeah Baby!

If you like the WC, and many people do, then to make it fit closer to a single step above the sanded Bruiser, I believe you should probably sand it to a finer grit, like 1500 or 2000 grit.

One of the very good things about these balls is their covers are easily adjustable with sandpaper or abralon or Scotch Brite pads. In fact, I believe that Lanemasters/Legends particles respond best to sanding, rather than polish.

If I were you (and you'd probably do this anyway, but I feel I should say it), before I sanded any new ball, I'd try it in stock form and then adjust it with sanding, as needed OR desired. Just make sure you try the base ball several times to insure that house blended oil patterns are not disguising differences. I've seen that happen too many times to count.

FYI and as an aside, I compared my Masterpiece to my Brusier and found the MP earlier and bigger hooking than the Brusier, with similar, but not exact drillings and stock surfaces. On my lesser oil pattern, I needed the Bruiser's better length and energy retention (but that's solely because the house didn't use enough oil for the MP to be useful.)

Good Luck.

Andy, if you decide on the World Class, and want to try a used one in good shape first, Robb has World Class for sale right now.

Interesting thoughts, Charlest.  I don't normally like to buy balls and "make" them fit a certain slot in the line up, but from what you say the L/L stuff is versatile enough.  Is there something else in the line up that would naturally work better for what I want, or is the WC really versatile enough to be the ball I'm looking for?  Thanks.

From my personal point of view, if you've actually been able to ramp up your ball speed, an earlier rolling ball like the WC is a safer bet than a go-longer ball like the Big Bang. (Notice I said "longer", NOT "long"; neither of them goes very long, except on heavy oil or with a lot of ball speed.)

Thus, the WC is safer, but not a guaranteed bet. But, even then, I can't say for 100% sure that it will be exactly what you need. Fine tuning, via the surace is always or should always be considered an essential for any ball. You changed the cover on the Bruiser to 1000 grit. No reason why you shouldn't feel safe doing that to the WC.

FWIW I've "played with" several of their particle (and resin) balls, by adjusting the coverstock from its base "sheen" to anywhere from 600 grit, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 4000 grit, and gotten various reactions, most of them satisfactory in most ways that you can consider.  I think the Big Kahuna is the only one I have not touched; I really, really like that ball with its stock surface.

Keep in mind that, unless you purchase these used, they are not cheap experiments.

(Since I have returned to 16 lb balls, I will be posting several 15 lb virtually mint condition Legends and Lanemasters balls for sale in the near future. They include 2 World Class, a Masterpiece, a Satisfaxion.)

I don't know if I mentioned that I'd try to do it earlier, but I was able to get on a Qubica system today.  There was slight carrydown so I had to play a relatively tight and direct line (couldn't get it far right of the pocket), but my speed on the system averaged about 17.8mph, so yes it's a considerable increase over my previous 15.5mph speed.  Of course, I'd probably normally be throwing closer to 17 rather than 18mph.  But still a large increase, with the fact that I've dropped my rev rate some as well.  With this in mind, I think I'd be safe getting the World Class.  Don't know when I'll get one, but when I do, I'll be sure to let you guys in on how it's working for me.  Now my only question is surface, which isn't really an issue.  I suppose I'll just try the WC in its out of box condition and go from there, as would make sense.  Thanks for the help charlest, I'm kind of antsy about how it will perform, and to hear the crack you guys always talk about when L/L stuff hits the pins.
