Replicating factory finish
« on: December 07, 2007, 01:07:41 AM »
I help out in a shop whenever classes allow me to do so.  The only balls I'm not real sure about how to replicate the finish is Lane Masters/ Legends.  Could you give me a run down of what the process is to do so on say the Sting, terminator, hornet, New standard and New standard 2, Black Pearl, etc.

Thanks,
Nick

Their "matte" finish is, I believe, a maroon pad, then a grey pad (both are included in the surface tuning kit they used to come with).  The "sheen" finish is maroon, grey, buttload of polish, then a real light hit with a grey pad to knock the shine off but leave most of the polish intact.  Most of the "polished" finishes are maroon, grey, buttload of polish.

That information used to be on their website, I think it was removed in the redesign.

Thanks shelly.  I thought I had remembered it on the website but I looked and could not find it.  I tried what you said and got close to it.  The sheen just seems to be a somewhat hard one to get but I'll settle for what I got.  Thanks for the help.

If I might add, just be sure to use Legends/lanemasters polish or another one with no abrasive/grit in it.

No problem with that.  The shop I'm at has quite a few options there including the Lane Masters polish, pads, and cleaners.  Strong cleaner...ate the bottom out of the same type of bottle they kept acetone in....

WOW! the Hornet is 800 grit + polish and its a dry lane ball, how do they do that?

I guess I don't understand how a dry lane ball could be at 800 grit + polish. Btw, I'm seriously thinking about getting one thats why I'm asking.

The Hornet uses a harder resin than its stronger twin, the Buzz. I thinks it's in the rqnage of 78 - 80 but you should check the web page to be sure. Most Lanemasters are in the normal range of 73-75 or thereabouts. In any case, I have both and the Hornet is the closest Lanemasters comes to a true dry lanes ball. It has a real core and a fairly arc-like backend, not flippy. The Hornet can clear the heads on some very light oil paterns.
