Style Differences..
« on: April 17, 2006, 05:45:46 AM »
I'm Fairly new to the detail of how to drill a Ball but I want to get the best of out a Legend ball..

I'm not quite sure what kind of bowler I am be casue I'm not too sure what each style really means between a stroker, cranker and tweeker..

I have lot of rotation on the ball but im not sure how fast I'm throwing it.. I can throw either slow or fast but I prefer to throw with speed.

I kinda like to play the line tight... Not sure what's that called..

Still deciding on which ball to get.. I'm thinking NS but I'm not sure if it will go long enough for me.. YB has the distance but also comes with more hook.. and I don't mean to be picky.. but it's kinda plain.. Lolz..

This new ball I guess will be mostly used from medium-oily lanes... because I have a Hot Rod Hybrid for medium-medium-dry lanes.. I have to check how I drilled tne ball and i'll post it... I don't relly like it to snap a lot but more of a smooth will slightly snaping..And as for where i stand on the approach, on medium oily lanes I have myleft foot between the left middle dot and the one left of it...

I was reading on Legends site and I'm thinking about getting it drilled either "Label Leverage" or "Length"

Label Leverage:
Pin 3 3/8" from PAP and the CG in the middle of the grip, about 1/4" to 1/2" right of the Center Line.

Length:
Pin 5" to 5 1/2" from PAP and the CG from 0" to 1/2" right of the center line.

Sorry for the long and rookie entry but how do I find out my PAP, Rotation or Tilt..?? Any information is greatly Appreciated.

The types of bowlers are, as you mentioned stroker, tweener, and cranker

A stroker typically throws more down and in, and has a relatively low rev rate, they tend to project the ball out onto the lane as opposed to applying alot of upward lift. (ball speed and axis tilt really don't have much to do with which classification you fall in) RPM's<250

A tweener is typically around where you said you play, they have a medium rev rate and tend to rev the ball, but they do not depend on playing in to have success.250<RPM's<450

A cranker really revs the ball, they play very far in and apply alot of lift. 450<RPM's

The classifications tend to generalize alot and one can certainly adopt different rev rates and general styles.

Although axis tilt and speed as well as some other factors do not matter with these classifications, they are as important criteria for ball selection.  To find your PAP you need to go to someone that has an Armadillo (plastic spherical device with numerous lines that are used to match up to your ball track), a quarter scale, and probably some drilling experience.  For a fairly detailed explanatuion on how to find your pap, here's a link:

http://https://www.buddiesproshop.com/33/How_to_Find_a_Positive_Axis_Point_PAP.htm

Good luck.

PS: Those layouts are quite different and judging by the fact that you don't know how the hybrid is layed out, I'd really wait until you talked face to face with a driller.  Make sure the driller sees you throw the ball and measures your PAP, you can't, and I repeat, can't guess as to your pap.

Alright i see what you're saying.. I'm a tweener... Also do you have any suggestion as to which ball I should be getting or should I post up how my HotRod id drilled..??

Bacause I'm Pretty srue that the HotRod doesnt have my PAP.. Because the person who drilled it didnt ask me to throw a few ball down..

Your PAP is determined by how you bowl the ball, therefore any competant driller will be able to determine your PAP off of the HotRod, then work out the best drillings for future balls,as long as your release stays constant so will your PAP.

You can find your pap using any ball, and every ball has pin to pap measurements.  Even if your driller drilled the ball refrencing your grip rather than your pap, there is still a pin to pap measure.  I would have a driller find your pap using a similar process to that used in the link and then have the driller find the distance from the pin to pap (you can already find pin above mid, just find the midpoint of your grip and measure straight up).  I'm pretty sure that the Hybrid is symmetrical, so thats really the only major criteria one needs.  I have just learned that all Legends is symmetrical so the same applies.

To better underrstand what a PAP is:

quote:

Positive axis point (PAP) – Point on the surface of the ball that signifies the bowlers axis of rotation, on the positive side of the ball.

Anyone else know which ball i should purchase..?? The line i line to play is somewhat tight.. maybe like 4-6 board maybe less... for medium-oily lanes
