Hook vs Flare
« on: January 12, 2007, 05:56:44 AM »
My Black Pearl has as much length and out hooks my Big Bang by 3-5 boards with the same surface.  What is really the difference between hook potential vs flare potential?

With more flare, the ball will loose its energy sooner, and have a smoother path through the lane.

That's funny, because I've always associated lower-flare balls as being smoother than higher flaring balls.  I agree about losing energy due to the higher flare, but I'm not sure how to reconcile the physics with what I've heard or seen from others' ball reactions.

In the end, flare potential is not hook potential.  The Big Blue was a strong ball for heavy oil (at the time) but with a very low flare potential (0.025-ish).  Very, very smooth, from what I've heard.

Robo,
The other roomies replied to your second question ... I have input on the first; the coverstock/core combination of those two balls is causing that difference ... particle pearl versus the load on the Big Bang, as well as the core shapes. Check out the web site and compare ... just my opinion.
(BTW, my BP has a bigger backend than my BB too).
