Tell me about your NS2 impressions
« on: July 28, 2008, 01:19:32 AM »
Hello, first time that I post here for information. Well, the title says it all - I have the opportunity to get my hands on a NIB NS2 at a reasonable price. I never tried a LM ball before, but would like to, so I am not sure if I get along well with their design philosophy (I am a bit afraid of the higher RG of LM's cores).

Anyway, since the NS2 is a high load particle piece and was advertised for heavier conditions, I might give it a try with a strong, rolly layout and a lower pin distance (there are several balls in stock to chose from) as an addition or even replacement for my aging Fuze Eliminator (more details in my profile). The NS2 looks like a very strong piece, as far as I can judge LM equipment.

So, what's your take on the ball, its suitablility for oil? Any maybe someone can compare it with an Eliminator or other ball?

Any comments and input is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance

Hi, I am back with some info on the NS2s in store to choose from: they all have 3+" pin distances and a TW of 3 ounces or more. Concerning all your input and Jeff's warning not to put a too rolly layout on it (the long pin would make this rather difficult), I see two options that appear effective for my game and needs:

a) applying my "standard" drilling, pin at 4-4.5" from PAP above the ring finger and CG stacked, or...

b) put a label leverage, or something close with a strong pin position and the CG in the palm onto the ball.

Honestly, option b) is my favorite, because it would increase mid lane action (where I'd need it on soupy shots) and tame the back end. I once had a TPC Player with such a layout at 800 grit matte - it worked very well on oil. It did not hook much or abruptly, just arced all the way down the lane, but worked very effectively on a down-and-in shot across 2nd arrow for me.
In fact, it would be a ball reaction I currently miss in my arsenal and would IMHO be quite suitable for a particle oil ball like the NS2. It is also in line with LM's drilling recommendations on their balls.

Option a) might work, too, but I am afraid that the resulting stronger back end reaction, paired with the particle coverstock, would not yield the best reaction on oil.

Any ideas, comments or thoughts on this?
Option b) sounds like a good plan to me

b)
and here's why.  If you do label, and decide that it's not quite strong enough for you, you can plug and redrill closer to stacked w/out concern of the plug being in the track.
The Gathering 2014 is near.  July 25-27 in Winston Salem, NC @ Creekside lanes.

Yay, I took action! My first LM ball, and it did not hurt (so far)!

I got a NIB NS2 with a 3.75" pin and 3 ounces of TW. With my span, this leaves a lot room for layouts:  both option a & b are possible without a problem, e .g. with pin proximity to potential holes. And for a label drill, I can even put the pin outside and slightly above the ring finger, so that there si no danger that the pin might come too close to my PAP so that the ball would rotate around the pin axis.

Well, I am anxious to see waht a LM ball will do for me, and how the NS2 fares in my hands and in its intended oil ball role.

Many thanks so far to everyone who gave some input on this! Your support is highly appreciated and made things much easier for me!

FYI - got my NS2 punched up yesterday. I discussed my drilling plans with my pro shop operator, and he confirmed the aforementioned ideas. The ball now has a 4x5 drilling, label by the book.

I made 3 games on a medium THS with it thereafter, and I am impressed. Not only does the label drilling match the NS2's "natural" characteristics well (a 4x3 layout would really have made it a rolly high end oil ball!), this ball is very smooth, rolls as if on tracks, and the sheen surface also seems to give it good length despite the high traction ability which shines in the mid lane. A 211 was my best result, not bad for a new ball.
It is a wonderful classic particle piece, and very strong! I seem to get along with the ball well, it reacts well to hand changes and allows me multiple lines - but it was only on aTHS situation, nothing fancy.

As a side note, the NS2 even makes a scratching sound when it hits the back end, like dry sand paper...!

It is too early to make a judgement, but what I have seen so far pleases me. So, thanks a lot to anyone who gave input here - it was very valuable and effective, and my "plan" with the NS2 seems to bear fruit

Expect a lengthy review in couple of weeks

Amazing piece... on a more demanding 39' 5:1 ratio pattern at my club house yesterday I strung together a pretty series with my new NS2 of 185-278-222-192 (repeating my personal high game record).
Again, the NS2 moved as if on tracks, carry was VERY nice, but in the last game I felt the ball (and me) struggle with starting lack of oil trouble in the track area - we were 6 players on a pair of lanes. Nevertheless, the overall package works very well, impressive ball

Good to hear diz.  Like I said the NS2 when it came out gave it one of the highest sport condition ratings for a medium-heavy condition of any ball they have tested.  It's a ball that I always take with me when you find those conditions most other balls won't work but the NS2 will.
