Ball Cleaner
« on: April 26, 2013, 11:35:42 AM »
Just got the Higgs Force and have thrown it a few games. Ball really soaks up oil.  Cleaned it after playing and it still shows like faded oil tracks.  what is the best cleaner for this ball?

There are 3 cleaners that should remove all traces of oil and almost any thing else considered to be dirt on a bowling ball:
- Clean and Dull
- Hook-It
- LaneMasters ball cleaner.

I agree with Charlest. Clean n Dull is my favorite cleaner, but I would add that Powerhouse's Adrenaline pads should be used with Clean n Dull especially for oil guzzling balls. The pads reach the deeper pores on the more porous coverstocks like your ball (and my Full Swing). The combination of Clean n Dull and pads is very effective.

Check Powerhouse Bowling's website. The marketing for the Adrenaline pads is not clear as to what the pads actually do. So I recently sent Rich Hanson of Powerhouse an e-mail asking him to explain the function of the pads. He promptly responded (I did not save his e-mail response) saying that the pads are a deep cleaner which should be used in addition to Clean n Dull.

I hope that this (wordy) note helps!!!!

I use Hook It on my Seismic Dominion, not always right after league usually a week later before my next outing and it removes every oil track from the ball even if they are dried in.

thank you for your response.  how would you compare the "Scuff" cleaners that storm or motiv has in relevance to the clean and dull?  are they pretty much the same? close?  not at all?

The "Scuff" cleaners are all abrasive, as far as I know. (I know Motif is definitely abrasive.) The cleaners I recommended and Adrenaline wipes are not abrasive. There is another called Valentino's Resurrection that is also abrasive and does a bit of deep cleaning as well., but I know Resurrection takes a  ball to 800 grit US/CAMI (or P1600 FEPA, the Abralon grade.) The problem with the others is they are of an unknown grit level. So you'd have to resurface your ball after using them.

That's odd.

What I they first came out I emailed him Rich Hanson, then the Track product  manager, and he told me that Adrenaline wipes were NOT designed as a cleaner, but as a chemical enhancement to the oil absorption properties of resin. That is, although oil had been absorbed by the resin, Adrenaline will restore SOME of its original ability to absorb oil, making the ball hook more and earlier than it does now, but not as much as when you get around to doing an oil extraction. In other words it is a temporary fix to the ball, making it absorb oil more and more quickly.

As far as I know nothing cleans deeper than Clean and Dull other than an oil extraction.

Here is Rich public posting of adrenaline wipes:
"Curt and Ball Doctor are right on point. The Adrenaline Wipes help restore/improve the balls ability to absorb oil. Although this product will clean the surface of the ball, it's main purpose is to go deeper to clean the sub-surface. They are more effective on today's reactive resin covers than on older balls from the 90's. The reason being is that older balls had lower absorption rates than newer technology balls. By no means will Adrenaline take a ball that is designed to hook 10 boards and make it hook 15 boards. What it will do is allow newer balls to perform "like new" longer and restore some performance to older balls."

I wonder if the formula has changed from pre EBI Track to post EBI Track? I LOVE Clean n Dull.

Charlest, probably just a matter of semantics. Hanson's note to me was very similar to the response that he sent you. In his e-mail to you, Hanson suggests that the Adrenaline pads are a deep cleaner. When I contacted him, I was just concerned that the pads altered the make up of the ball. He assured me that they did not.

Thanks for the note.

Just wanted to clarify as much as I was able.

I tend to stick to LaneMasters cleaner and Clean and Dull. When I keep the ball clean, NuBall, a ball oven, extracts no oil, because the ball has absorbed none. So I don't need Adrenaline wipes to restore oil absorption rates. I have them, but have not used them on my balls in a long time.

I use
simple green
clean and dull
hook-it
If simple green or clean and dull don't remove track marks I use hook-it.  If the surface isn't dull enough or there is track wear I sand with simple green then add a polish if needed. I normally sand ball surfaces each week but I put in 20+ games so I at times will have 10+ games on a ball. I clean everyday because how often I bowl. My fingers are so dried out from cleaners.

I'm a big fan of Tac Up. It seems to clean the best without completely taking off the surface on the ball like some cleaners do.

I've never heard of any bowling ball cleaner removing the shine from a ball UNLESS that shine was the result of oil being ground into the coverstock. And, of course, unless that "cleaner" was an abrasive, like Motiv's Scuff or Valentino's Resurrection, which are meant to clean with an abrasive.
