Post by: amesdilang on August 20, 2014, 08:44:45 AM
Check out the newest release from Lord Field called Top Talent. Compliments the original Talent. For medium-heavy lane conditions. It has a smart tech coverstock with 2000 abralon polished finish.

As soon as the marketing catches up to the performance they could be more successful, I think that's the only thing holding them back at this point.

Gizmo,

I am curious as to what you are disapproving of with the marketing.  Lord Field / Lane Masters is very much a grass roots type of organization, focusing more on the average league bowler rather than the much smaller elite percentage. While still fairly small, you wont see the types of marketing dollars thrown around like you might from the Ebonites and Storms of the world.  From affordability, performance, and the ability to buy direct, there is definitely a cord being struck.  The most important aspect being performance, and if you haven't tried some of our new equipment, you're missing out.

Let's face it, the marketing plan is working pretty well if you ask me, I mean, you know who we are right?

Haha nah Bradley, nothing to see here.  jellington, I should be more clear, it's really just the appearance of the balls and the names, otherwise I like what I'm seeing.  I don't like big huge marketing campaigns and advertising beating you over the head.  I like seeing results, not fanfare.  It's really less of a criticism and more of an honest observation playing a bit of devil's advocate.  The majority of league bowlers care more about how the ball looks and how cool the name sounds than how it reacts.  Sad, frustrating, but also true.  At this point, most of the Lord Field balls look a little underwhelming next to a Storm or Motiv ball.  I like how they react, it's just trying to convince other people to give them a shot.  Being brutally honest, it's harder with balls that don't have a lot of shelf appeal.  Balls that look and sound cool fly off the wall, balls that don't, stay there for a while regardless of the company.  My comment was basically that as soon as the shelf appeal inevitably catches up, they'll be in a lot better shape.

I'll take it one step farther. Who actually makes these balls and do staffers and administration actually get a say in what gets made and or comes over from Korea? Does this company actually get to see and observe it's bowlers that they are working so hard to create balls for? How does each release differ from the last and how do I market that to customers? If I wanted to try to put one on my wall, how would I know which to try to market to customers?

Gizmo makes a good point. If I'm new to the brand as a shop and want to pick a ball, how would I know which to pick and is there a pricing category to compare said ball to other brands as far as pricing?

Tony martin personally helps in making the balls and they are not made by factory line they are done individually and yes everyone has input on the product

We have one guy I believe who put up the cash and decided to sign the contract, but I don't know him. I threw some of their releases while I was visiting in Dallas TX. They're not bad. The biggest complement is how they read the mids. I compare them to Brunswick with how they are core dominant with weaker shells reading the mids and not being overly aggressive on the back like Storm Roto can be. My biggest complaint was that there wasn't much separation between balls except for the Big Hurt which was a 7 board jump from the 3 previous I tested, which was about 3 boards of separation between the 3 previous. That one was good. I don't make the decisions on what goes on my way though.

If one were to go one the wall it would have to sell quick to get another. Other than that it would be like some of the other companies which sat forever and we just send it back and order by customer request. That is why I agree with Gizmo. There isn't much advertising for them and it makes it hard to sell them. Heard of LF/LM yes, Know what the equipment does... not so much.

Another challenge is that they aren't available from distributors, which adds in a lot of extra risk to the pro shop.  For example, I've got a Storm Punch Out sitting on the wall right now that I'm not sure I'm going to be able to sell.  Nobody wants a ball called the Punch Out that is white and gunmetal gray, but if it doesn't sell, I can just send it back to the distributor.  Storm is probably the top brand in bowling right now with way over the top marketing, but the Punch Out is a whiff in my opinion, because regardless of performance, it's not very attractive.  I've got it sitting right below an Optimus and an Absolut Flip, people go right for those.

Very good point. If it doesn't sell and you didn't buy from the distributor you can just send it back. Does Tony take them back to LF if they don't sell?
