Finger hole depth
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:17:52 PM »
I'm trying something new.  I'm going to drill out a ball in a day or two and rather than drill the fingers to the usual depth I'm going to drill them just the tiniest bit deeper than my finger goes into the ball - or less.  I want the finger to "bottom out" when I put my hand in the ball.  Reason being I have a problem sometimes with jamming my finger a bit too much into the ball, causing me to hit up on it at release.

Has anyone tried this?  Thoughts?

I am aware that this may bring thumb weight into play, but on this particular ball that's OK, as I want an earlier rolling piece with this ball (an old Roto Assault).

Crazy old Librarian!

I guess it could work, but I try to feel the proper depth by feeling the crease right at the top of the finger hole.

Bob,

I do a similar thing with my finger inserts: I use shims to make the holes tight enough that I just barely get my fingers in to the first joint. It prevents a number of problems, one like yours and the other is my middle finger cracks below the 2st knuckle and bleeds all over the ball if I'm not careful. Blood makes it harder to hold onto the ball ...: D

No, it will bring finger weight into play.  No problem other than making sure the ball ends up legal.  --  JohnP

John I said thumb because one year in Reno I had a ball that was thumb heavy.  They drilled the fingers very deep to offset that.  But as I think about it, you have to be correct.

Hope you don't have nails, it'll be about the same as grinding them on chalkboard. *shivers*

I tried something similar years ago, and found as my hand swelling went up and down the ball was never totally comfortable. Finger depth was consistent, but without an insert, finger lift and ball rotation suffered. As charlest mentioned the slightly oversized grip with shims to comfort was where I found the best feel. This also made it easier for me to control finger depth.
If you use inserts maybe there could be a combination of ideas? Hope this helps.

An additional benefit to drilling a shallower hole is you rarely drill into the weight block.
