Clearing the ankle
« on: July 11, 2006, 01:58:49 AM »
Hey guys I am finally getting my game back in order after countless issues.  Bad drillings, poor release, bad timing/mechanics and trying to muscle the swing too much.  Anyways things are finally getting back in order, but one problem is still reoccuring and I can't fix it.  I do not get close enough to my ankle.  It's not even a fear of hitting my ankle, the only ways I get close, I end up having to change my swing path too much and pull it inside.  I guess the problem might stem more from clearing the body.

Are there any drills or anything I should work on?  My accuracy and balance is pretty strong, it has to be on the summer patterns they have going on.  My misses are usually pulls from slow timing.

I am not sure if it helps: but keeping the upper body upright throughout the approach with square shoulders helps a lot to develop a free pendulum, preventing the swing behind the back that might cause your problems.

Another thing to try is to "grab" your target on the lane when the ball comes forward in the ankle area, imparting some muscle to make a straight but fluid follow-through. Timing is important here, because when you start too early, you will pull the shot and be tipped off-balance. I'd suggest waiting until you feel the weight of the ball on your fingertips, when the thumb clears its hole. This might keep your pendulum in track, too.

Check to make sure you are drifting left in your approach, from your starting position. Drifting will bring the ball away from your body/ankle.
Also, what tylerwiles said....To avoid going behinf the back, make sure you push the ball straight out in front of you, and not out to the RIGHT...You will lose leverage if you drift out of your correct swing path.
Drifting is not the same as walking left, in your apporach. If you drift left, and keep the same target on the lane, you will lose accuracy and leverage. You will not project the ball the same unless you drift the same number of boards from shot to shot...Look down at your slide foot when you throw a poor shot...
