12 splits in 4 games..... on pocket hits!!!!
« on: May 01, 2003, 07:37:34 PM »
I'm fairly new to bowling. Yesterday, I was bowling on medium oil. I found a line that worked early on. Lefty here. Release on 16th board, target on 2nd arrow (10th board). Typical release at 8' o clock, not too much lift. After the first game, the leaves were incredibly bad splits. Mostly pocket hits, but left a couple 7-10s, 6-7s, 6-7-10s etc. Why could this be happening? I tried to make moderate adjustments, staying on the 2nd arrow, but moving a little left or right, to no avail. I even tried going down the channel, but it was so dry, it was crossing over the headpin. I don't roll very hard, just nice and easy. I tried increasing the pace, but the hook was gone. I use a mild reactive ball 15lbs.

We have one pair in our house with a notoriously bad rack - usually the 6 pin. 6-7s on dead flush hits are NOT uncommon.
but a 6-7-10 - don't think I've ever seen one of those where the ball wasn't at least headed really high - maybe just as it hits and hooks behind the headpin - but it's still gotta be a high hit.

It sounds like by keeping your target right at the 2nd arrow (10 board) that you are right on the oil line, which is the point on the lane where the shot transitions from wet to dry. If a few people are playing in that spot, and you aren't DEADLY accurate, your shot will do what I call "wobble" - which is the worst of the over/under conditions. You think you threw it well, but sometimes you leave a bucket, sometimes a split, when you probably executed just fine, but sometimes went a half board too far into the dry - sometimes a half board too far into the oil.

The reason I can say this with almost certainty is because until very recently, that's what I've always done. I've found that line, and stayed there. Now, I find the line, and then move BOTH my feet and my target 2 boards left. This is called a parallel move, and gets me off the oil line.

If you're leaving splits like 6-7-10s on what appear to be good shots, try a parallel move.

One of those leaves that I see regularly on good pocket hits in my house is the dreaded pocket 7-10 split.   Now sometimes the pocket 7-10 can be the result of a ball coming up behind the headpin, but other times it can be just a terribly bad break on a very good hit.  In my house, the 7-10 is so frequent for the best bowlers in the house that they've just learned to shake their heads and go on about their business putting the ball back in the same place again.  Also, carrydown right at the pindeck can cause the pocket 7-10, where the ball is driving and then suddenly skids slightly as it enters the rack.

Most of the other leaves that you described are heavy pocket hits.  Combos such as the 6-7, 4-10, 6-7-10, and the such are typically balls that catch too much of the headpin (high hits).  However, I have seen the 4-9 (your 6-8) on very good pocket hits too, where the ball just got too aggressive in the pins.
