Confused :-(
« on: September 13, 2003, 06:41:29 AM »
Ok, need a lil help here

Bowled yesterday in an area championships. Took 4 balls, phenom, superfreak, obsession, triple threat. Everyone is struggling to get any ball to make a move. You would this with the phenom superfreak and the obsession that i wouldnt have the same problem, especially since i drilled them all fairly strong, especially the superfreak. None of them would turn. Barely 5 boards movement. I was playing straight on 10 board with a frickin superfreak drilled to turn in the bottom of the ocean. So that was the first thing that confused me.

NEXT, out of sheer desperation i pulled out my triple threat. I picked it up first ball and bowled the line i was playing with my superfreak, and it went brooklyn. Then the next shot, feeling a little more adventurous, i took a step left on the approach, and sent it out to the edge, only to see if rev up and turn the corner and destroy the pocket. My reaction was confused to say the least.

So why did this happen? Why are my oil balls not turning on oil when my ball for dryer lanes is?!?! Not only is it turning, but out turning the others by a good 10 boards. The phenom/superfrea/obsession are all driled strongly. So whats the problem?

Good luck and high scoring

Don't know to much about the balls that you have, but I think that heavy oil balls are more or less made to arc on long oil.  If the pattern was short oil soup your oil balls might be rolling out while the drier lane ball is acting like racing slicks on a car spinging through the water. Once your dry ball clear the oil, and hit the dry, it took off.

Personally i dont think the phenom is all that track made it out to be. Its a medium oil ball at most i think. The triple threat is drilled weak. Used for dryer lanes. Im thinking of giving the Superfreak a bit of a shine. Would that solve the problem? and if so, what grit should i shine it to?

Good luck and high scoring

WOW-----the Phenom for med oil? I don't think so. Try using it awhile and come back and say what you think of it again.

What probably was happening is that the polished cover on the Triple Threat hit dry and made it turn. My guess is it was a short, but heavy oil pattern--as was already suggested. When a dull ball encounters dry it will not hook as hard as a polished ball.

The cores in the Phenom and Super Freak have a higher RG than in the Triple Threat. On oil, the lower RG core is better and will hook more. When the lanes are drier, the higher RG core will hook more.

So, as you can see by the RG numbers, the Phenom and Super Freak are not as good for heavy oil as balls with lower RG's..!! =:^D
