2 handed strategy.....
« on: May 17, 2019, 10:15:58 AM »
So i'm about 2 months into my conversion to 2 hands.  My release is really getting there.  I'm getting way more consistent with it, and having way less issues with a bad release.  My accuracy is still improving, it's not great yet but i'm mostly there (at most i miss by 2 boards left or right) and only have an occasional bad tug.

But i'm starting to deal with some issues of ball reaction.  When playing 1 handed, i've always been speed dominant and needed to find the dry to get a good reaction with my shot.  But i'm really starting to think that for two handed, i need to not be near the dry outside at all.

i can play there with After Dark Pearl but i seem to be having carry issues with it.  I'm always leaving 9 or 10 pins and the usual adjustments to carry those lead to leaving the other. for instance if i leave a stone 9, my adjustment leads me to wrapping the 10 pin.

But with my other 3 balls (hyroad, turmoil solid and Halo Pearl), my line seems to be cleaner keeping it just inside the dry outside.  But the issue is that i'm just inside of it, so a slight miss right catches the dry and comes back way too hard.

And now my confidence is shot, despite dealing with elbow pains bowling 1 handed, i really start 2nd guessing myself if the switch was worth it.  Ultimately, i know it is, my health is more important that my bowling score, but these lower scores are beating me up mentally.

So i guess i'm looking for some strategy help from other two handers, or just people that are smarter with this game than me.  Am starting to really think i need to get way tighter with my shot.  get deeper off the start and limit my break point to maybe 10 or 12.

I do plan on practice it, but some friendly advice of some other things to try would be greatly appreciated

also cover stock adjustment advice would be helpful too.  I know things work differently for everyone but maybe some starting advice would go a long way

Leaving back row pins is mostly about entry angle.  With the added rev rate; you need to find a way to tame down the backend a pinch.  Solid 10s are a result of the ball going a little too far down the lane before entering the pocket.  If the ball starts hooking a couple feet sooner; you will leave less 9s on solid hits and kick out the 10s on half pocket hits.  Been a two hander for more than 25 years and that is my experience.  Do a surface adjustment to even out the backend reaction a touch and you should start to see better carry percentage.  Keep us updated!

Good observation

I wonder if that's why belmonte is playing left more lately. I feel like he went through a urethane phase and he's just playing better angles now

Belmo doesn't get credit for being one of the top 1-3 most accurate bowlers on tour. People will refuse to believe that a two handers can be a shot maker. He steamrolls everyone because he repeats shots the best, makes adjustments the fastest, and sees angles that no one else can see on the lane.

You also notice the match he lost with those 2 pocket 7-10s, he was using a ball that was going too far down the lane and not rolling sooner?  Also notice how he rarely he ever used the ball he helped design, the Timeless, on TV?  Ball was too flippy and even guys on here doing reviews said it was squirty on oil.  How many times have we seen solid 9s from him?  Not as much as you would think with a 550 rev rate.  He made a killing with the Hyroad which I believe was a more rolly piece than skid flip on their conditions. He even won a major with the Lucid which from my experience was more rolly than flippy on the backend.

There are 3 types of balls I have had the most success with over the past 5 years or so.

1.  Balls with high RG and low diffs (Deep Freeze)
2.  Balls with low RG and medium diffs (Gamebreaker 2 and Violent Eruption)
3.  Balls with a 2 inch pin to PAP layout (Arson Low Flare Solid and Track 300C).

Even though the Violent Eruption CAN be angular.  I hit it with fresh 2000 pad, added more of a compound than a polish over it (Storm 2 or Clean and Sheen), and drilled a small P3 hole to add a little more flare.  Ball has been absolute money when playing inside for me.  Still clean through the heads and yet a heavy roll on the backend with enough angle to kick the 10 out.

My main 3 ball arsenal consists of Deep Freeze, Gamebreaker 2 Solid, and Violent Eruption.

Thanks for the advice. But ultimately I think it’s not for me. I had another practice session and the knee pain is getting too much. The main reason I was switching was due to some elbow pain but the knee pain is worse than the elbow pain from 1 hand bowling

Have you always had knee pain or only since you tried going 2 handed?

Slight minor pain prior. Like nothing Advil couldn’t fix. But I’ve had problems with my two hand slide and my foot getting sideways in the finish forcing side pressure to my knee due to the way it was facing. I had issues getting my toes going forward
