2-lane courtesy question
« on: October 28, 2007, 11:06:15 AM »
A slow bowler on lane 1 is on the approach and is about to bowl. Bowler on lane 2 has his ball and has been ready to bowl for about 10 seconds. Bowler on lane 3 then picks up his ball and is now also ready to bowl. In a league with 2-lane courtesy, which bowler goes next, the bowler on lane 2 or 3?

Rule of thumb is the bowler on the right goes first.

bowl in one regional and you will see what a great pace they're lane courtesy gives you... lane 3 wouldve went next and then when they went lane 2 wouldve went. It really sounds slow but its not bad at all. Not saying which person needs to go in ur league but keep that in mind. And look into finding out exactly how the pba does it. Kindly suggest this to ur fellow bowlers and then u will never have to worry about who goes next ever again.... hope this helps

So this means that the bowler on lane 2 has to wait longer? No, the bowler that is ready to bowl, in this case lane 2, should be the one that would go next.

If you knew how the pba done it you would understand much better... 1st of all the person on lane 2 shouldnt even have their ball in hand and ready until lane 3 goes... This seems extreme for a league I know but if everyone learned this methos nobody would have to wait, and the pace would be so much more faster than you would expect. I double jumped walter ray williams and that all it took for me to learn what was going on....hehe that look he gave me was priceless!!!!!

fooey!
1st time I disagree with you, John D.

2 lane is as good or better than 1 pair. It's all what you're used to and can do. It takes 2 brain cells and some getting used to, in order to do either regularly and consistently.

Having bowled for 40+ years and not being too dim witted, 1 pair is harder to get used to than 1 or 2 lane courtesy. Been there; done that. Any system will work IF people adhere to the rules!

And that 's what's wrong with 2 lane courtesy. Many different opinions all think their way is correct. One league I bowl in used to have 2 lane courtesy and, often, five guys would be standing there telling someone it was their turn to bowl.

"It's your turn"

"No, after you"

"I'm waiting for him"

"Geez, will someone go?"

NO! That's not what's wrong. What wrong is the other element: no one knows whether the person on the right or the left goes first, when both are ready at the same time. Same problem exists with the PBA's one pair courtesy!

I've bowled several PBA regionals but even in the first one it didn't take but a couple of frames to understand the pace and rhythm of who goes next and when.It gave me lots of confidebce to know that no one on either side was going to run up on me.

That right there describes the scratch sweeper that I bowled in yesterday morning. People not knowing when it is there turn to bowl. The PBA way is the best for setting a tournament pace. Plus if you pay attention, you always know when it is your turn to bowl.

USBC nationals are a different story. They tell you in the pre-meeting that it is one lane and then the monitors are supposed to enforce it if they catch you giving two lanes on each side. Been many a "discussion" with glaring idiots when the whole center won't wait for them to throw a shot.

LOL.  Might as well be a 4-way stop!

The only problem I see with the PBA rule in league is that half the time people are running round getting food/drinks, checking brackets, buying 50/50, etc... and are not ready to bowl when it's their turn.  Therefore, I'd say in this instance if the guy on #2 is raring to go, let him. I'd rather let someone that anxious go do their thing than wonder if they're going to run up on me if I go.

I've gotten a few dirty looks and heard a few balls slam at Nationals because I didn't give them the courtesy they felt they needed outside of the rules that were stated before bowling started.

We don't do 2-lane courtesy in leagues here, just 1-lane.  The unwritten rule is that if you get up at the same time as someone else, whoever is picking up a spare goes first.  If you both are on the second ball, the worse leave goes first so as not to jinx the other guy.  Especially if it's a split.  Otherwise, it's the guy on the right.
