I was just thinking of this earlier for some reason, and I wanted to see what others thought about this. Well, about 3-4 months ago, I bowled a tournament at a house that is really known for being really easy. We got to the match play part of the tournamet and scores so far were high, but not as high as usual for this house. I bowled one of my best friends one of the matches and ended up beating him, 280-269. Well he ended up complaing the rest of the day about how much I was spraying the ball that game and still killed him, and he was actually kind of mad that I sprayed it that much, and scored.

Anyways, I am trying to get to my point. When I bowl on easier shots, I actually try to spray it more. I mean, why not? I mine as well take advantage of it when I have it. When I have tryed to bowl better and be more precise on an easy shot, I usually don't bowl as well. Most of the time that I do this, it is because of carry, but when I spray it more, the carry is usually there, and the scores are big. Plus, I know this pisses bowlers off more, and if it is match play or what not, this also comes into advantage as well. I know, I am not too proud of spraying it, and I don't mean to be cocky, but I can bowl on more challenging stuff, so I know I am not just a house hack. Just wondering how everyone else bowls on the easier to walled up shots? When I am on walls, I spray it and I mean too...What about you?

THC is definitely its own play with its own angles. Easy or not, you can make a THC hard by not playing it well.

And they don't always play the same. When I first moved to my current house, they had old Brunswick synthetics with A-2s in the back and they were a 36-lane house. They used a thicker-viscosity oil. The way to play was to stand left, throw right (for a righty) and just pick a breakpoint "area" about 45-50 feet down and pitch it there. The oil didn't move much, the lanes had strong backends and the sideboards carried well. Averages were very high.

A year later, the house knocked out a wall and added 16 lanes. They changed to a thinner oil. They put down new AnviLane lanes and installed GS-X pinsetters. They changed the sideboard material. Perhaps the biggest change, the new part of the center got a different kind of air conditioning system, so the air moved differently and thus affected evaporation in a different way.

The shot changed. Instead of stand left/throw right, the best shot was to try to go up 10 or thereabouts. The new oil on those new lanes moved around a lot. The new sideboards and machines affected which hits carried better than others. Adjustments got different.

It took me about six months to fully "get" it. My marks for standing and targeting, as well as my speed, axis tilt, axis rotation and equipment choices are all different.

Playing on sport shots and PBA Regional shots over the summer has definitely shown me the differences in playing those versus playing house THC, but it's also taught me that THC has its own combination that you have to crack. Some things won't work in specific houses with specific conditions.

On some easy shots it is more advantageous to spray it a bit, for the same reason the throwbot has never shot a 300 game. By spraying the ball around, you are less likely to wear a hole in the pattern and it will last longer, not only that you will make the shot easier by knocking down the over/underness of the wall instead of creating an abruptness to where the oil and dry are.

Everybody does it to some degree, most simply put by just saying: On tougher shots, I aim for a target, on easier shots, I aim for an area. You do tend to lose a little control when you're not aiming directly at a target, but like Jim said, that can be a good thing. I can be accurate when I have to be too, there's just really no reason to be on a wide open shot.

When you say you're spraying it, it almost sounds like and some of the comments seem to indicate you're intentionally aiming at different spots or areas. I know that can't be the case.

I think the situation is that you are just not focusing and concentrating on one board out there as your target. You're kind of letting the ball go to an area and whatever it hits, it hits. House shots being blends, resin balls being what they are, this can be done and the ball seems to find its way to the pocket area.

The major benefit of this is a relaxed armswing and release and there is where all the power is. Pro bowlers are able to target much smaller areas, like 1 board PLUS have that free armswing and easy release to get that same carry. Most of us one-house-hacks need the free armswing and stressless release much less than we need to hit one board.

FWIW our summer league high average is also a major league sprayer: has and hits 5 - 7 different boards at the arrows, no less the breakpoint and is averaging 221. He can be accurate when needs be, but not for very long. It can be depressing watching him bowl. I try not to ...
