Is it OK to drill into/over pin?
« on: August 11, 2006, 08:15:55 PM »
Hi, I was wondering if there is any reason I shouldn't have a finger hole drilled right on top of the pin? Ball is a Delta 1 Rule. Grips will be used.

Jabroni is correct.  If you choose to drill into the pin, if you go pretty slow when drilling, you should just about eliminate any worry about the ball cracking.  But I personally choose not to drill into the pin.

I asked my ball driller (Rod Ross) about this one... He says he has never had trouble as long as he drilled out all of the pin (he has done this 100+ times w/ no trouble... does void the warranty but very unlikly that you will have trouble... if the drilling i wanted would put a finger hole on the pin i would feel just fine drilling out the pin.

Yeah.. if your going to drill into the pin, drill it all out. I've seen half drilled pins start to crack or seperate from the ball.
Can't you get your desired reaction with out drilling out the pin? just a thought

When drilling out pins it is sometimes neccesary to use a bit smaller than the ending hole size.  This can minimize nasty edges that might be caused by the bit walking/jumping as it is drilling through the different density materials.

I've had four balls with partially-drilled-out pins. Number of problems: Zero.

I've also heard this myth of it being "against the rules," but I can't find it in the book. Two of the people that have drilled balls for me have been in the business 30 years, and my current driller teaches other drilling classes. They all say it's legal, and with that kind of expertise talking, someone will have to cite me the rule before I'll believe otherwise.

Unless you're going to be in a league or tournment that bans any plugged equipment whatsoever, my opinion is to drill wherever you need to drill to put the drilling on it, and if it cracks later, drill out the pin, plug the area and just re-drill the finger hole.

A pin is made of a substance very close to plug material, anyway; it's not like we're drilling into a plutonium mine or anything. (g)

There are sometimes voids under pins though that can cause problems...

ya I had a driller drill halfway into the pin. I hated it for the looks of it and also I had my holes drilled straight in (no grips) so I could feel the pin with my finger. Eventully the pin cracked a little. Not very smart to drill a ball like that.
