Looking for a different look. Have the Theory and Critical Theory but not able to use very long. Does polishing help get ball down lane more? Need to know before I do. Thx

In general? Yes, it helps very much. I've never used either of those particular balls, but I've done lots of surface changes on my equipment, and polish makes a HUGE difference in length. I've noticed that on the conditions I bowl on, though, that there's usually a more effective surface/polish combination than the surface I had on it before (e.g. 1000 to 1000 polished). That might be just me though.

Basically confirm the previous post - and the judgement that polishing per se helps a ball through the heads, since the shiny surface lets the ball glide easier/longer on the lane conditioner film than an open surface. But beware. everything comes at a price. With a glossy surface, the ball might react much sharper to friction and less easy to control and predict, so you might trade one problem for another.

Anyway, I agree that surface tuning is subject to trial an error. What works for one player must not work for another person, and sometimes you have some "sweet" grit/polish combos that work very well in a certain house or for a certain style, and with a certain ball.

Adding polish will IMHO be the right and easiest thing to try - just be aware that you might try variations of the same thing or even "go back to start" until you get a proper result. It might take several approaches.

Polishing while keeping the surface grit the same changes the shape of the reaction (allowing the ball to save more energy for the backend), thus giving more length and backend. Changing the surface grit impacts the overall amount of hook. Smoother (higher grit) finishes decrease the overall amount of hook.

Well if you have still them at out of box finish and based on manufacturer's description:

Critical Theory - 4000 Abralon. Coverstock description: Designed for Medium to Heavy oil conditions. Insight™ (Pearl) - This pearlized version of Insight™ creates an amazing amount of dry-lane friction, but the addition of pearl allows this ball to glide through the fronts allowing for an explosive backend reaction.

I think you have two balls that might be too strong for the condition you are bowling on. Based on your statement of not able to use them very long.

Polish will help but, as someone else stated on here, it might not have the affect you are looking for. The only thing to do is try it. Only you will be able to determine if it works or not. Most of us on here have done lots of experimenting with coverstocks.

If you don't like it just have it sanded back to original surface.

Thanks for suggestions. I did some experimenting on an old Ace and Passion. The Ace works like it was brand new while I haven't worked with Passion enough so the jury is still out.
