Bowling as a Sport
« on: March 24, 2008, 02:38:54 PM »
Im having an argument with somebody on another forum. Hes trying to convince me that bowling is a "game" and not a "sport." Of course I know thats not true, but im looking for some arguments to use.

Does he think that golf is a sport?  If so, then you have plenty of arguments as bowling and golf require similar skills.  Also bring up the fact that the term game is often used to describe a sport.  People go to football GAMES, baseball GAMES, hockey GAMES, and basketball GAMES.

You're both right.  The majority of bowlers, I think, if you really looked at it % wise would fall into a category in which bowling would be considered a game.

However, on the upper end where you get into competitive bowling, it is definitely a sport in that the physical conditioning and mental "toughness" come into play as much as in any other sport.  Unfortunately, the % of bowlers who take the game seriously enough to elevate what they do to sport status is relatively small, and most recreational or non-bowlers will never see or understand that side of bowling.
