300 or 800 which would you rather have ?
« on: July 22, 2011, 02:30:31 AM »
I almost got my first 800 last night and am still looking for my first 300. Since my brother got his 300 last year, my mom is always saying you'll get your 300 someday. I don't think people understand that the 800 is almost better than the 300. I might want the 800 first, but would gladly take either. Any thoughts ?

You're entitled to your opinion.  Unfortunately, your opinion on the 800 is way off base.

I think 850 is the new 800. Anything below 850 is just not a big accomplishment anymore.
Balls create so much area and go off like a bomb at the pins that 800 can be shot just as easy as 300 at times.

Although rolling a 300 game is the ultimate achievement for one game shooting an 800 series for three games is a truer test of how well you are throwing the ball and how well you can continue to CARRY.

800's are harder to achieve. I would take the 8 over the 3.

I would agree with sunshine on this one.  Shooting any kind of an 800 is a great accomplishment, and to equate an 800 now to being an 850 to be a real accomplishment is in my opinion garbage.  I shot 814 and 826 about 6 months from each other, and each time I had more nerves that last game than I ever had shooting a 300.  Basically, take the nerves you have for the tenth frame of a 300 and multiply it times 10 for each frame in the third game.

I like having accomplished both, but for me the 800 is the bigger accomplishment.

800 for sure...it meant and means more to me.....300'd barely gets any reaction now.  I personally have 3-4 times more 300 than 800's.

Now the ultimate would be 800 at nationals

The 800 means you really bowled well all three games.  Massive figjam alert!  I got my 800 the same night I shot my first and second  ever 300's back to back.  Really should have just hung them up after that.  Got my third 300 but the second 800 is elusive.

I'd rather have 300 - 800 series... Right now I'm settling for 1.

I never rolled either a 300 or 800 and now I'm probably too old to ever do it but if I'm ever lucky enough to get one or the other I'd prefer an 800 for reasons that some posters have already said.

I remember growing up, I had a couple of friends that all had 300's and I was just dying for one.  I was 19, and had 2-298's and shot a 800 before I did the 300.   About 8 months later, I finally shot the 300.  If you think about it, it is harder to shoot a 300 than it is a 800.  You have to be perfect for the 12 frames, where as the 800, you have a slight room for error.  Either way you look at it, and everyone does have an opinion, both are great accomplishments.  I have 7 300 games, and all of them felt like it was the first time ever shooting them.  800's to me just happends when your on a roll for the night.

Shot my high series of 851 in 1998, I would say 800 still has merit, 300 has none, I have seen a 166 average bowler who can not even see the pins shoot 300 game (665 series). I also have seen multiple 300 with brooklyn strikes in them, But don't recall a sub 200 bowler shooting 800.

I have yet to shoot either a 300 or an 800 and I can tell you I'd rather much have the glory of an 800 series over a 300...though I wouldn't mind killing two birds with one stone and achieve both. IMO the 800 holds more weight than shooting a 300 these days just because of today's equipment allowing for so many to be shot as oppose to the 70's and 80's where it was more difficult for the average bowler to carry consistently when hitting the pocket with 3-piece urethane, plastic, and rubber.

800 anyday!!! The 800 is three great games and the 300 is one awesome game!! Average 267 for your three games and you have an 801!!! It also equals a lot of strikes!!! lol
