Well, a day of bowling with a finger-tip ball.
« on: August 19, 2006, 01:26:22 PM »
I went to my local bowling alley today and bowled 5 games. I was lucky enough to find an actual finger-tip ball that mostly fit (rarity for an alley ball). I must say, for not bowling in 10 years (and not having much experience at all) things started to come together nicely, for me anyways. I've been practicing my approach mostly with conventional balls, but this time I wanted to see what I could do since I found a fingertip ball that mostly fit. I don't know the technical terms, but the pin on the ball was about 1 and a half inches outside the ring finger. There was quite a bit of hook in the ball, a bit more then I expected.

My first game was a 168. I had a problem bowling because the floor was a bit sticky (I exchanged shoes a couple times, it was the floor i'm sure... yes I don't have my own shoes yet). My second game was a 184, third was a 200, fourth was a 178 and last game was a 160. By the last game my knee was hurting pretty bad. Unfortunately I have a problematic knee, especially after 3 games. On the 200 game I was a bit excited because I didn't have any open frames until the 10th. Then I had a split, which I didn't make. My last game (160) was a disaster, but I managed to pull a few strikes threw towards the end. Man my knee was starting to cause trouble by that game.

The lanes started to dry up so it was really hooking towards the end and I no matter how many boards I moved to the left, I just couldn't hit the pocket dead on. At least this helped me with figuring out my drill pattern for when my ball comes in. I think I might go Label-leverage.

Well, sorry this sounds more like a journal entry then a post, but overall I was happy with today and I remain VERY excited to really start bowing again!

Thanks for reading!

So what advantages did fingertips have, if any? I bowl with a conventional grip and have no problem hooking the ball so was wondering the benifits of a fingertip drilling.

You get more revolutions on the ball, you can hook it more. You get the hand out of the ball easier.

Probably the most important investment a bowler can make is a good pair of bowling shoes, especially if you have a bad knee.  Dont try to save a few bucks here, spend as much as is needed to get the shoes that you need.  You can save the money by buying a mid-priced ball or a used one.

If you are planning on bowling once a week or more, look into the shoes that offer exchangeable soles.  This way you can better match up to different approaches at different centers or when your own center's approaches vary. For bowlers that need to slide a lot, look for a pair that offers a teflon sole or pucks.
