6 man teams
« on: September 16, 2003, 10:30:12 PM »
Hello all,
Need your opinion on this one. do you think having a 6 man roster is a good idea? we had it till last night when we had a blow up about it and one man quit because of it. A few a the bowlers felt like they pushed to hard because they didn't want to sit, and were worried about messing up. We are now getting blown away and everyone is atleast 20 pins below last years averages. Let me know! thank you!

I am in a league that allows 7 man rosters, but 5 men show up to bowl.  Most have 6, and some use a rotation where a different guy sits out each week.  That way, everyone gets to bowl an equal # of nights, and the team make-up isn't really that different week to week.  However, this league also allows subs.  Not sure if some leagues with 6 or 7 man rosters allow that, or if they MUST use the # 6 or 7 bowler.

Personally, in this situation, the rotation is not a bad thing.  Sometimes the break can be a welcome relief.  Also, it saves you from paying for a sub if you have something else come up - an added bonus is your team isn't saddled with carrying your avg. minus pins either.

Also, my impression here is that there may be other personality conflicts amongst your teammates.  It sounds like nobody on the team trusts the other 4 guys to be able to shoot when they need to?  If you don't have confidence in each other, how can you effectively perfom as a team?

We do allow subs and we are the only team that had 6 men show up every. I have to agree with you about the nonconfidence right now but what i think is weird is that it is the same team that bowled so well last year together. Thank you for your comments.

Maybe you could play peacemaker in this deal, and provide a rotation list.  The "odd man out" could then decide whether to take the night off, sit with the team as a cheerleader, or sub for another team.  Our league will allow you to sub even if you are on the roster, you just cannot bowl against your own team.

Good Luck to you guys - and maybe remind them it's early in the year - a couple of losses now will not have much of a long term effect.  Right now my Tues. nite team is 6-26. ...but it's a long season, so who knows what may happen!

I have seen teams that carry a 6 or 7 man roster rotate based on previous week scores.. For an example, on a 5 person team with a roster of 7, the bottom two bowlers in the week take the following week off while the two who sat get to bowl.. If someone is going to be absent, the highest of the two sitters comes in to take his place.. In the case of the team that I watched do this, there was absolutely no arguing because their team rule was in place and everyone was comfortable with it

Yes, if everyone agrees to it. We used a seven man rotation two years ago and no one liked it. Last year was a 6 man rotation with the 6 guy could not show up most of the time and it was great. This year a five man team with 2 subs. That is the best because all 5 want to bowl every night. If you have bowlers who hate to sit out then 6 man teams will NOT work, as you are finding out. Sorry for your situation.
