interesting USBC Tourney stat

Found a posting of all the 300 games bowled at the national tournaments from 1901 - 2021 . Since the advent of modern Cores and coverstocks the # of 300's has skyrocketed...just like in leagues....So is it the equipment mostly or the bowler?

Looks like the number of 300 games has dropped off considerably since 2015.  Fewer bowlers?  Harder lane conditions?

The higher performance equipment certainly plays a factor for the 1989-2014 period, but what happened starting in 2015 that caused such a drop?

I only started going to the Open in 2009, but in my opinion the biggest difference is in the oil patterns. Specifically the machines used to create the pattern.

Also, notice how the number of 300 games went down when we went to fresh oil on all squads. I suspect the bulk of those 300 games prior to 2015 were in minors, on already broken down patterns.

Synthetic lanes and oil machines are often overlooked in scores.

If you want to eliminate the modern equipment....dry them out. Bowlers love to complain about the burn.

Another thing to consider is attendance. The total number of bowlers also has to be a factor.

The oddity in this list would be 1989(pree-resin) there were many 300's bowled in that tourney..other than that it would seem that the equipment was the major factor in the number of 300's.

How is this even a question?


I can tell you right now, from experience, I carry stuff with modern equipment that I wouldn’t have had a prayer of carrying 30 years ago.

The old urethanes were great (in their day), but these reactive resin “bombs” people use nowadays are just unreal in how they hit and carry compared to them.

The numbers presented do not tell the story. Unless it's broken down by 300 games per X number of games bowled, just the total number of 300's is almost meaningless.

At nationals, you still need to execute better than you do on a house shot. So the fact that there are 300s shot at nationals shouldn't be a surprise. And whose shooting them mostly? Yea you will have a random 180-190 avg guy shoot one, but for the most part, its the higher avg, top amateur/pros shooting most of them. They see this shot as soft/easy, while 90% of the bowlers see it as tough and hard.

This is more coincidence, but wasn't it also around that time (2015) that they changed their tradition of posting the oil pattern while the tournament was running to posting the oil pattern after the tournament ended? That took away the ability to strategize what equipment to use and where to play.

Also, coincidentally, wasn't it around that time that BowlTV stopped livestreaming the tournament? That also took away a team's way of looking to see what others are doing and what lines to play, as well as what equipment was working on the lanes from what they saw from the pattern.

Again, all coincidence, but those could have also played a factor.

1989 was the first year of HPL synthetics.  Not sure how much was surface and how much was the pattern but scores were high and remained high after that. I think part might have been that they were flat oiling and possibly went to a slightly more crowned pattern.  Resin balls starting in 1992 definitely impacted award scores.  In 1995 I shot 2087 all events with an Excaliber.  In 2002 they started using sport patterns.  Scores were still very high especially on the HPL which played off the corner, something we never saw prior to that year.
