Guy on the opposing team last night dropped an 809 on us and didn't make a spare. Had two opens in first game. 300 game 2. Opened first frame game three then off the sheet. It's a funny game.

How many guys at the end of the night would think, man what I threw away in missing those spares ?

bowled a summer league in a different house last year and saw a guy who had a back swing with his arm straight up, very high ball speed and rev rate. On the fresh of the first game he was money, 3 300 games and several other 10 or 11 strike games. But by mid second game, he was all over the lanes and it was not uncommon for him, to not get to 600, never threw a 700

So much of this to me is the spares that were missed.
Were they single pin spares? Were they pocket splits? Were they simple 2 pin spares?
If they were pocket splits, so what if they were not picked up.
Simple spares are another thing.

All make-able. The post match quote, "who needs spares to bowl 800?" (said jokingly). I guess it's easy to be a good sport about missing spares when you get an 800 anyway.
Personally, I'd be pissed at myself knowing what I should have gotten.
I like throwing strikes, but I HATE missing spares that should have been made. Makes me feel like an incomplete player. Any of us doofuses can string together strikes.

I used to keep track of how many opens I had in league on an index card in my wallet. I would put 3 opens 1 split or 3 opens ect. At the end of the season I would love to look back and see how many pins (in theory) I cost myself by missing makeable spares. It really makes you work on your spare game seeing it as a total number

Interestingly enough this happened in my league tonight. Guy 2 pairs down from me starts front 7, stones a 7 pin (lefty) misses it, goes sheet for 267. 2nd game starts front 11, gets slow and only gets 7 for 297....so he is sitting on 564 for the first 2....and he goes on to shoot 300 the last game for an 864....he only shot at 1 spare because the 7 count was the fill and he missed his only spare shot. I guess when you roll 34 out of 36 you don't have to shoot at many spares...
Darn good shooting. He was in the pocket all night.

597 tonight. Made many spares, but not all from what I could see. He was two pairs down.

Funny things happen in the game. I once sat down in the bar after missing the cut in a very high scoring tourney. A friend came up and asked how I bowled. I thought for a minute and said, "not good, I picked up too many 10 pins".
