Title: ? about insert hardness
Post by: Raven829 on April 18, 2008, 10:30:58 AM
Since switching back to using finger inserts a few years ago, I have only used Vise ovals.  I don't care for the lifts.  It seems that I destroy grips after only a handful games and then they must be replaced.  This is especially true on my middle finger, where I can wear away almost all of the grip edge on the right side.

Since I have nothing to compare to, I was wondering how other companys' grips compare to Vise in both the longevity and firmness department.  I think I would prefer a firmer insert (firmer than Vise but not rock-hard without inserts).  I'd imagine that the longevity of all inserts are relatively the same (15-20 games before significant change) but I could go through middle finger inserts in as few as 10.

I cannot give you any recommendations because I use the same Vise grips but with the lifts. What I was interested in was how you could wear out (destroy) your lifts in 10 - 15 games! Mine get dirty inside (the yellow or white ones) but last for months bowling three times a week.

Do you know what you are doing that causes your lifts to wear out so quickly? Do you have claws for fingernails? Or ??????

None of my business, just curious.

Haha, I honestly don't know how I can wear them out so fast.  Like I said the middle finger is a lot worse than the ring.  I guess I just really rub hard on the right side of that finger.  No I don't change them that often...I usually wait about 50 games, but by then they are so shot that I can barely keep the ball from falling off my hand.

Don,

My pro shop gave me some Contour Power Grips that a pro could no longer used because Contour didn't pay the PBA fees. I usually use Contour's Yellow or Orange grips. The ones he gave me were silver and red. I found both of them different enough at times from my normal colors that the feel of the ball at the release was inconsistent. Basically they were both much firmer, with the Silver being the firmest.

Now I sometimes use Vise Grip clear grips which I find of a similar softness to my Contour Yellow and Orange. SO obviously these are not for you. But you could try the the red or the silver.

I have found Turbo Quads to be the softest with 10th Frames next, vise on the stiffer side but contour power seem the stiffest of all the inserts I have tried.

could the quick "wear" problem be related to a pitch problem??

If you are wearing down one side I would look at your pitch. I use turbo quads and they last me about 3-4 months depending on the ball as some are not used as often. I also tend to go a little too tight in the beginning to make sure they have a longer life. I find that the white quads are the longest lasting. The colors are next and then black is the softest.

I started using the clear grips on all my gear, and I LOVE THEM!  They are so soft and I can really get a consistent release with them.  Even after a bunch of games and some serious time they're still in great shape.
