Low track bowler
« on: January 07, 2010, 02:26:47 AM »
I have thrown a low track semi spinner since I can remember. I know I have to change my style to more up the back with fingers inside to compete on the long oil patterns we see weekly. I have tried the underhand football toss and watched the slow motion videos on you-tube but seem to revert back to too much on the side rotation and spinner city. Any help would be appreciated as I top out at about 195-200 avg. and only get about 4 strikes or so per game.

my brother went through the same issues starting this year since he started bowling competitively with me,
what worked for him was starting the ball out about chest level hand underneath the ball and wrist slighly broken (or cocked back)

then as he did his pushaway and dropped into his backswing I had him really focus on keeping his elbow to the inside (close to his body)

smooth swing and emphasis on the elbow tight to the body on the swing and really just focusing on an uncupped to cupped wrist movement and getting his thumb out of the ball before turning the hand

this really worked well for him, he had a complete spinner release and slower speed around 15-16mph and the ball would have an uncontrollable hook on the backend
since we started to change his swing and release his track is up around the correct area,
and his ball motion is so much improved some guys in the league cant believe it
his carry is a lot better and his speed and revolutions are up a lot also

he still has a lot of movement on the ball, but the movement is now controllable

things that really helped him were starting with the wrist uncocked when he started the ball
keeping the elbow in towards the body,
and getting the thumb out with the uncocked to cocked wrist motion

Good tips so far. I'd just throw in a simple "trick" I read in a trainer book soem time ago, and it helps a lot in order to prevent a topping ball release: when the ball come forward in your swing, imagine that you "chase" it down the lane with your ring finger, slightly pushing it with your ring fionger tip forward until it is gone from your hand and fingertips.

This sounds easy, but if you are not used to this type of release it will certainly feel very uncontrollable and uncomfortable. But the "trick" is just to get the thumb out of the ball first and let the ball "roll" across your fingertips. With good timing, revs come by themsleves, and the "ring finger chase" trick keeps you holding the hand wrist in the correct position. Just remember to maintain this position until the ball left the hand!
