What was your first "high performance" ball??
« on: September 05, 2003, 02:29:28 AM »
What was everyone's first "high performance" ball and did you know anything about the ball or all of the variables in bowling when you selected this ball?? I was your typical "give me a ball that hooks and drill it to hook the most" first time buyer. My first "high performance" ball was my Brunswick Zone Pro Azure. I knew nothing of the ball or what lane conditions it was made for or even the conditions I was throwing on. I just liked it because of the color and because Brunswick was familiar to me. So what was your ball and the story behind it??

How am I supposed to knock all 10 down with one ball?!?

My first non-plastic and fingertipped ball was the Ebonite Turbo which I loved.  When reactive was introduced my first real hooking ball was the Columbia Pro Hook.  What's funny is that my 2 year old Turbo out hooked the Pro Hook at the time.

plastic (Polyurethane)= Wine Gyro (Ebonite)
urethane= Cobalt rhino (Big B)
resin= Teal Rhno Pro (Big B)
particle= Skybolt (Storm) Or Surge (Columbia)  I forget which one I got first.

I always read about the balls before I got one.  I used to get Bowlers Digest
when I was a kid (16, that's when I started bowling leagues) so I had somewhat of a clue.  Although I didn't know to much a bout drilling I jus always did label until I bought my Copper Rhino pro X.

I guess I'll have to say yellow dot. Average went up like crazy but I switched to finger tip at the same time.

Next ball, black u-dot. Took my girl friend to proshop buy her a starter ball and ended up buying the u-dot also. Unfortunatly the drilling sucked. That ball tore up my thumb every 3 games.

I believe i was about 10 when i was given a Turbo X, i believe it was urethane but man at the time i hooked it out of the building.  I was given an Xcaliber the next year i think and i just thought it was the best thing ever.  It had been plugged at least twice already also. lol.

My first high performance ball was the El Nino.  After trying a urethane Shadow, and Super Beast, I thought the El Nino was the greatest ball ever made, lol.  Did I care that I bought it off the internet, and it came with a 6 inch pin, what's a pin or CG?  It still worked pretty good though, shot my first 700 in practice with it, then bought an Azure Pro Zone, and then it just went from there.

urethane: turbo
pearl urethane:  Blue Pearl turbo
reactive: turbo x
particle: Azure zone pro
particle pearl: el nino 2000
reactive pearl: x-factor

Also had a turbo panther and a Nitro.  I really liked ebonite before storm's newer stuff.

I also knew nothing and trusted my coach and/or driller for ball suggestions and layouts.  Now I go through them on my own and experiement.  Maybe thats why i averaged 187 at 12 years old and 187 at 21....lol

My first was the old Black Hammer, then it was Hammer products for years, untill I tried Storm, and now..., well now you know, by my signature and user name, the rest of the story.
