Timing Problems!!
« on: July 01, 2006, 01:40:37 AM »
Hi, Ive a problem with my timing.

I have been finding myself getting earlier and earlier. That is the ball is arriving before I stop sliding. This has made my accuracy decline.
To combat the problem Ive started taking the first step before I push the ball away. This seems to have helped. However Im not sure if this is the true answer.

Should I look to speed my footwork up to catch the swing or just stick with the later pushaway.
I know you should walk at a normal pace but I always used to have to slow my feet down to be consistant. Now I think they have become too slow.

I would ask my coach but he's moved to Dubai. I know sick of me
Any coach have an answer to what they would recommend.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I noticed it on videos of myself first as I had been really struggling with my accuracy on my spares. The later pushaway seemed to help but I knew it was only a stop gap method.
I will try making the approach a little longer as sandbaging mentioned when I get a chance in practice. I will also have a good read of Ron C's tips again.
Bones I think I have started to "lift" the ball over the bar a bit too much maybe. Something Ive always done to a smaller degree(John Jowdys ideas) Maybe thats what it is.
Thanks for all the ideas I will let you all know how it goes.

As you stated, timing is made of two parts, the amount of time it takes to complete your approach and the time it takes to complete the armswing (to the starting point). This gives you two choices to address your timing issue with two options to each namely increasing or shortening the time for each.

Timing as you describe offers two choices, either lengthening the time it takes to complete your armswing or shortening the time it takes to complete the approach.  With these two options you can see there are many options possible. The right one is the one that is easiest for you to repeat.

I am big on determining what is natural for someone to do. Otherwise bowling becomes mechanical and difficult to repeat. Alot of coaches try to enforce some standard mechanics which may or may not be the easiest for someone to do. The correct solution is completely dependantly on the bowler. So find your own solution to your timing issue with the above understanding. Once you work through all the choices you will have learned how to keep your timing together forever.
