A thought for Friday

Just thinking about how people complain about the "Lucky Strikes" (when others get them, that is) and how easy it is to score blah blah blah.  I wonder, what would bowling be like WITHOUT the side boards?  How many honor scores would be bowled then?  Every shot would have to be well executed and solid - no more of those "spin cycles" created by hard hitting equipment.

What if the sideboard area was cut out (like a window) and a large piece of 1" thick rubber mat was hung in it's place?  Wouldn't that work to "kill" the pin action off of the sides if it were hung loosely and not tight?  Wouldn't that be fun to try?  Then we could eliminate all the gripes about those non-deserving hacks who slop their way into 300's (and victories).

What do you think, would you like to try your luck on a shot like this?

Actually, I have.  The house I grew up in had pretty dead sideboards, but you'd still get a little kick.  It has been about 8 years since I bowled there last (it's no longer there).  The best avg. for a year that I ever witnessed was around 195.  At that time, I avgd. mid 180's in that house, and 193 in another more updated one.  BTW, it was a tough house anyway -  the higest sanctioned game shot there was 290, and series was 750 (which the 290 was part of).

Also, other houses in the area were using the wall, where we used a flat pattern to 30'.  So I wasn't too sure which had the greater impact on scoring - the sideboards or the oil pattern.

The sideboards are part of the game, much like the backboard is part of the game in basketball.  Why would you want to take part of the game away.  You have to realize that luck is very much a part of bowling.

One of the houses I bowl in has big holes in the cushions on the right side, where it's been worn through. They haven't replaced them in many years. It's currently known as a lefty house. Wonder why???

Hey 9,
You need to sacrifice a bowling virgin to get rid of bad luck.  Or was it throw salt down the lane...I can't remember now.
