Quantum Helix!
« on: August 21, 2008, 11:04:06 AM »
I ran across a Helix at a local pro shop for $70. It is undrilled AND left handed. It's the only time I'll ever have a chance to get that crazy ball, and was just wondering if anyone remembers/knows if it actually was a good ball? I want it just for the coolness and rarity factor it comes with......should I get it?

There were so many balls that was better than this one. I really dont think you should get it because I remember back when a few of the players at my house got them. And they wasnt nothing good at all. Make sure your proshop knows exactly where to drill... I have even seen some people screw up when it come to that. Is it the gold or the red one? John

The helix came in right and left handed versions.  They need to be drilled very specifically which is why there are both.  The idea IIRC is to put the urethane stripe on the bowler's track to allow urethane roll through the head and then the core will flare the ball to roll over the reactive end caps.

I got mine for 40 a couple years ago. Alot of poeple told me that it was drilled wrong and was possibly a left handed ball. I had the gold one ..... very cool lookin:=)

Get it, sell it on ebay for $150 like everyone else.....lol
The lefty thing might bring the value down a bit though.

I never had one but I used to roll one a friend had and really liked it. I wish I could find a 14# righty. There's a place in the bag for it.

Well I am my proshop guy so that's no issue. I'm not looking for a super hard hooking ball, and 90% of the reason I would get the ball is to just have THAT ball. It's the black/gold version. And as WSU said this ball is unique in the fact that it has right and left handed versions depending on where the reactive strip is. Anyone else remember if it hit well, or if it was pretty snappy?

LOL... I am a lefty who still throws a Quantum Helix and I love it... I throw it at one of three local houses around here. I have 3 700's and a 290 on the ball. I can tell you it is a conditional ball, on a med. condition where the outsides are pretty dry, the ball is a freakin wrecking ball... The only caveat is they have to be drilled a specific way so you need to have a driller who knows what they are doing. Anyway, I love the ball and it's fun to throw. If you can get it for 70$... BUY IT...

The gold and black one was not very popular at all. I remember my pro shop had 3 of them. When WRW won a tournament using it in my pro shop's house, my driller finally thought he'd get to unload them. Nope, even though WRW won using it, still no one wanted them.

The Double Helix, the red and dark blue one, hooked much more than the gold/black one and many more pople liked it.

By today's standards and oil patterns, the gold/black, the original is probably a light to maybe medium-light oil ball. That pearl urethane ring will go fairly long on today's oils.

I loved mine and am still holding on to it. The ball was so far ahead of it's time it was genius, a urethane stripe to make sure it always got through the fronts with a strong solid reactive for that big backend reaction.

But it was too expensive and too far ahead of it's time.

I never saw any righties with them but knew a couple of heavy handed Lefties that loved it.  There is nothin wrong with being a ball collector.  Punch it up

Good afternoon...

I know that this is an old topic, but on the off chance that anyone reads this, I am looking to buy a Quantum Helix, 15#, left-handed.

If anyone has one for sale, or can point me in the right direction, I would be most appreciative.

Sincerely,

Joe
