Bowling PBA Bear this weekend - need help
« on: June 08, 2017, 03:44:07 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Just found out I'm bowling 40' PBA Bear this weekend. I desperately need suggestions from those who has played it...this is my time seeing it.

My RR is 270-300 (can get up to 325 if I push it)
Axis rotation is 70-90 degrees
Axis Tilt 10 degrees
MPH - 18.5

I have the following:
Surelock Pin-up, stacked
No Rules (Pin drilled out ring finger, more straight)
Lane #1 Buzzsaw Pro-V pin up
Bad Intentions Hybrid
IQ Tour Solid
Timeless pin-up
Timeless pin-down
Hy-Road
IQ-30
Black-Ops
Widow Spare
OG Teal Rhino Pearl

I typically play along the 5 board.

Your help is greatly appreciated and needed!!!!!

Generally you're going to want a smoother reaction as it's a 40ft flat pattern.

I'd probably try your IQ Tour Solid, No Rules, and Bad Intentions Hybrid in practice to see if either of those will be a good look.

It'll just depend on what you actually see when you're there

Black ops isn't a bad option either, as it has a similar motion to the IQ Tour....

Don't be afraid to get left of 10, or 15, or 20, or more.   Flat patterns typically require a ton of patience and the ability to trust your good shots to tell you what is happening with the lanes. You don't mention how many games, but if it is more than 4 or 5, you will probably end up using something cleaner or shinier as you chase it left.
Do your best to not grab at the bottom of your swing, and roll the ball into the fronts, the pattern will expose every little nuance of speed, tilt and rotation.
Have some fun with the experience, it is truly one of the great challenges of bowling, and 200 is a respectable goal for any bowler on this type pattern.

Bear is tough.  Luke gave you the best advice.  More about matching your game to the condition than finding the right ball.

Last time I bowled on a 40-flat (Kegel Red Square), I went minus-40 for eight games.

Pieces I used were (in order): Yeti Untamed (pin down), Ringer Solid (pin down), Reax Gusto (pin down), Ringer Burgundy (pin up), and Avalanche Solid (pin-up). I used a Columbia black U-dot (old, old school) for a spare ball.

If memory serves me correct, I started around the second arrow and migrated left. Your starting point may be different, but the rule of 31 is something to consider. Be ready to shoot at a lot of spares. (I converted on 38 of 48 attempts, 79 percent, splits included.)

Thanks!!  It's 4 games switching lanes after each game. Should be fun!

When you're not bowling, watch what the guys that are on the pair you're going to next are doing. If they're using charcoal, they may blow the pattern open and make them a mess. If you watch them, you can get an idea on where to start when you get there.

Also, on a flatter shot, I wouldn't use too much surface. There's no shim and you will quickly begin to hate your choice and the people on your pair may start to dislike you. I'd say Iq tour solid, Bad Intentions, and the black ops when you have to chase it in.
