back in the slump mode again
« on: June 28, 2012, 01:23:34 PM »
It looks like I'm back on the bowling skid again. For two years I've struggled after the passing of my father. Then things seemed to be getting back on track in the last two months with the help from several people from inside and outside bowling. I was up in averages, spares %, and bowling was fun again. It was a long while since I shot 700's in the same week - it was getting exciting.

But now, the last 5 outings were all terrible after a good set at a house I struggled on the last time I bowled a match there. After that day, I really thought things were coming together....

I'm not sure if recent stress outside bowling (work) is part of the cause, or listening to advices from some of the guys playing coach at the alley, or me trying to get better quick, or all of the above. But it's really not looking good for me. Especially after the last two nights of leagues. One night I felt so mechanical and had no feel for the game. And last night, I just sucked. O/U reactions, 4 solid 9's, many ten pin leaves and bad feel/fit on the thumb - thumb swelling gets bad in these warmer nights. There's a positive thing I took home with me from these two nights of leagues, I missed only one single pin in the 8 games I bowled.

Anyway, a buddy of mine mentioned about stepping away from Leagues for a season after summer leagues are over. I'm really thinking about doing it. Take a long break only bowling during open play and maybe do some local tourneys. I don't want to risk getting burnt out or something like that. This is really frustrating.

Thanks and great advice Sir. One thing at a time. My GF always tells me..."day by day" :) I worry too much.. is it cause I'm almost 40? haha

Been there, am there, NOW!
Know what you're going through, intensely.

If bowling is to help you take a side step and re-focus your body and soul,
then you need some valuable practice session on a consistent shot with one or two balls maximum plus a spare ball.
You need to grab your brain and focus on one thing at a time.
If you;re bowling, then it's bowling.
If you're at work, then work is your focus with no, ZERO side steps on bolwing or any other aspect of your life.

One thing at a time, no more, no less.
Humans do not, cannot multi-task, no matter who tells you differently.

Don't think - just throw the ball.

Without thought, you are just dead meat.
You must think. You must not think too much.

Better put, think off the approach, the minute you set foot on approach, no more thinking.

Precisely!
That's the creed, the bible according to Earl Anthony: "Do your thinking in the setee area. Once you're on the approach, all your thinking is done. You get up, set yourself, eye the target and go!"

If you're not ready before you get up on the approach,  you might as well go home.
