I suck
« on: February 23, 2005, 02:06:21 PM »
I guess I need to vent slightly.

I bowled horribly this week.

Last Wednesday I shot 779 my highest series in league so far. I shot my first sanctioned 300 at the end of January. Slightly over 150 pins than what my average is. I felt really good to end the week of league by shooting that.

This week, the highest game I shot was the first game on Monday, 235. It went downhill from there. Shot 606, Tuesday, 572, tonight (Weds) 535.

I'm lost with what to do. I essentially cannot find a consistent release. Ball speed suffers because my release starts getting weird. I feel completely uneasy with what I do. Every strike just feels like luck. I miss simple spares now, I can't even shoot at the 10 pin because the ball either goes left of it, or slides into the gutter. Granted I have not been bowling that long, but I'm rather disgusted with inability to repeat shots and what not.

It's almost like I have an on and off switch. Some nights I can just turn on, a lot of other nights I can't. I can tell by the 5th frame of the first game how I will shoot for the night by the way I feel throwing the ball. Last night and tonight I knew I had no chance to shoot 600 because I was throwing the ball like crap.

Should I just give in and go to a coach?

David,
Read your own signature. "As you think, so shall you become". You need confidence. Practice much, much, much more. If you practice more, that switch will stay "ON" more. The more practice you have, the less you will have that on-again, off-again feeling. You will begin to do things the same way on every shot. That is what is needed consistency. Practice is what you need. Coaches are always great. I take a lesson at least once a year to tweek my delivery.
1) Calm down.
2) Practice.
3) Take a lesson.
4) (You will learn this with age) Never get too high (when you bowl great) and never get too low (when you bowl terrible).
5) Always think positive. Step up on the approach and think in your "mind's eye" of that explosive strike you are about to throw.
6) Never make up your mind in game one that you are done for the night. A few weeks ago a shot 143 in my first game. Played with my line in the end of that horrible game and shot 279 the next game.
Good luck!

So do porn stars, sorry could not resist.

I know what you mean about on and off.  One thing I do when I am bowling bad is try to concentrate on one part of my game, for me I think about making sure my pushaway is not too high.  Then I am not concentrating on everyrthing I may be doing wrong I am telling myself to do something right and things will fall into place eaiser because of muscle memory.  It does'nt always make me do great but I get more consistant.
