Aiming A Ball
« on: March 07, 2020, 02:22:55 PM »
I don't think I have ever seen an article on how to aim a bowling ball but I have seen many on what to aim at such as a particular board or arrow. I would be interested in reading how or what you use to aim your ball to hit a particular board or arrow on the lanes.

I’ve always kind of looked to my breakpoint and draw it back to the arrows and go.

Walk straight ahead, but slightly turn your hips and shoulders so that your arm will align with your target.

Note: you should not be holding the ball in the center of your body, but off to the side in front of your bowling shoulder.  This allows the ball to clear your hip and stay under your head.  You may have to play with how much hip/shoulder tilt you need to hit your target.  This is especially useful for shooting at corner pins.

In addition to the above comments, make sure you are aiming with your eyes rather than using your arm.  Focus on the target.
Once you try aiming with the arm you might start using the wrong muscles.  Keep the arm swing as free as possible.

Go on YouTube and search Kegel webinar 3 most common mistakes. It will be much better than any advice on this site

Years ago Mike Durbin said something that made a lot of sense.   What ever spot he wanted to hit he envisioned an area of 2 boards either side of his "mark".  He said you don't want to strain yourself trying to hit a small target.   It was natural to throw at the center of an area so it relaxed him.   Anybody that can win 3 Firestones got to know something

Another thing about Durbin, he used different approach steps to modify his approach speed, taking 3,4,5,6,7 steps.  He also used grip modifications to tune his release.   He won tournaments using all these steps plus going to a semi or fingertip or a houseball drill when he felt like the thing to do.   He said it was a lot easier using these techniques instead of trying to train his brain and muscles  to do a bunch of different things.  Kind of like the modern bowler changing balls all the time to fit the lane conditions.

You have 1100 and your posts are about the same quality as his.  If you would live by your “less is more” line we would all be better off.

Personally, I aim at a target board at the arrows, as an extension to the breakpoint down the lane. I use the visual target as a guide to get me down towards the foul line. Once released I follow the ball with my eyes and check its reaction and where it goes, for potential adjustments, if necessary.

Try using your pushaway to aim...if you can use your ringfinger to 'push' at the target, it is much easier for the entire hand to come out of the backswing and release at your target.
